I'm looking for a basic modelling routine/ program that will allow design of building pads, dams etc and creation of different surfaces, including cut/ fill surface being the difference between natural or existing and the design surface.

And main criteria is it's robust and doesn't get cranky and give garbage or silly result after running different scenarios.

Maybe googled wrong query but I can't find a simple no frills standalone program.

thanks
Richard

yes agree excellent.
I looked at this years ago but decided against it!:-(

I was hoping for a standalone application for the times I just need to get some sensible results and quickly.

Terramodel- though Trimble is moving to TBC you can still use the old program. I can do a quick go-to-meeting and show the advantages.

Ever heard of a south african developed program called modelmaker, it is developed here , but also marketed in the USA, it is modular based and scalable, in that the you can get cheaper modules depending how many points you want to model, starts at 400 points, then 9000 , then 30000 and finally unlimited.

There are in about 36 modules, from road design, powerline profiles, irrigation, gravity services long sections, dam design etc.

It been going many years, continually developed and is the standard in southern africa, what would suit you in USA is the exchange rate, you could get a really good deal.

Their web site
http://www.modelmaker.co.za/

Their price list, which also gives prices in US dollars
http://www.modelmaker.co.za/price-list-mainmenu-36.html

I have been using for 10 years, even though civil 3D is used here, the standard for submitting surveys is a modelmaker file.

This program isn't standalone but it's a good option if you're already using Autocad.

I've been using it regularly for 3 years or so and have no complaints.

There's a free demo version,

So how much of TerraModel is going into TBC and do you know they are actually working on that?

Thanks Pdop and Artie
Both Modelmaker and FlashMNT look interesting.

I like the latter as I have Bricscad and will see how that integrates and well it works.
Also downloaded Modelmaker and will try that. It looks as though that needs a dongle which i try to steer clear of these days.
My surveysoftware uses one and its a pain when its attached to my PC and I'm out with the laptop having forgotten to bring the dongle along!

regards
Richard

Not stand alone but clever and cheap, if you have AutoCAD.

I actually have the light version of TBC. At first glance I don't see the functionality of TerraModel but I can see in the help menu that COGO is in there somewhere. I'll take some time over winter to dig in and get up to speed.

It has a corridor routine but it doesn't seem able to import an older Geodemeter aln file which is what I used to go from TerraModel to TGO. So I suppose this old dog just needs to learn some new tricks.

I really like the Google earth feature where you can bring in the background photos. Never had that be so easy before.

So TBC seems to be in my future. I'll probably even go to the full version at some point.
