The goal was to set up on a section line near the midpoint of the north line of the northeast quarter of the section, shoot the monuments at the northeast and north quarter corners and wiggle in to get on line and set the midpoint. Shoot east, then shoot west. Angle was 179d59'51" for a 0.06' deflection from being perfectly on line. The midpoint measured to be 10.00 feet to the west of the set up. Wham bam! Out ten feet and 3/8 inch thataway, set the mark and it's beerthirty. No need for least squares on that one.
Experience eventually pays off!
TDD would have setup over the midpoint in 7 seconds.... he's done it a thousand times...
All great and wonderful but it's simply compensating errors.....lol..... It's great when a plan comes together. Modern instruments come in handy also but they are only as good as the people who use them and the people who use em are only as good as the people that taught them (except for those special cases.) We had a job where we had to turn extra short, to super long, as in 100:1000 and return 1000:100 and missed the angle by 12". Great when a plan comes together with modern stuff.
Must be nice working in Kansas - good line of sight - everywhere.
Sex is good. When you get it right, it's even better.
He he he
So in KS where all these lines fall on roads or open, one can clock the odometer from one corner, set up and do your thang or clock odometer then get a pocket rangefinder out to get close to the MP for the set-up. Seems like child's play with an inexpensive rangefinder.
Anyway. What is 3/8"?
A great many are near the center of a road intersection or a half mile away where the road makes a dog leg because the original surveyors didn't do what they claimed they did. Really narrows the search area.
As to what 3/8" happens to be: It's more than a little bit but less than a tad. About midway between 1/4" and 1/2". Then again, maybe not.

Precise sign-tific units of measure must vary from locale to locale.
Around here I'm pretty sure that 3/8" qualifies as a tad. 3/8" is surely greater than a scooch. Anything greater than a rat's asshair is a scooch. And anything greater than scooch is a tad.
yep, pretty sure 3/8" qualifies as a tad... 😉
Are you young at heart?
3/8" is about 0.03' here unless your some kind of realtor or layman
