I am having problems importing a DXF to a job. The file comes in and the lines are visible in MAP, but the lines are not visible as Linework. I think the lines are being imported into the background as I can liven them up in MAP individually, as if I wanted to stake them out.My dealer recons it is my version of AutoCAD but I've had another file from a consultant and same thing. I searched for a video on this importing as background, but my Magnet version?ÿ 6.0 doesn't seem to have the option in the import settings the same as the video.
Do I have to get Magnet office to do this. Will Magnet Field only accept DXF or DWG from Magnet Office.
I usually import the dwg 2000 format and that seems to work well.
Haven't seen this error before.?ÿ In Exchange are you selecting Lines and AutoCAD DXF as the format??ÿ Are they 3D lines?
So I never have used Magnet Field Office software. But I've used Topcon Office 3D & Pocket 3D quite extensively for grading models. In regards to the DXF import of linework, it's not always worked as well for me as just importing a basic 2000 .dwg file type with the linework into it. Topcon Office 3D seems best suited only to import basic lines, 2D & 3D polys as well as simple text (not multiline or multileaders). Not sure why but I've always had better luck doing that. Same with importing TIN; I just extract the 3D Faces out of a Civil 3D surface, save only them in a 2000 .dwg file & then import it it as basic TIN into Topcon's software

I am SHOCKED that a dealer would "recons" that it wasn't the product that he has to support that is the issue. It HAS to be ACAD...could NEVER be my stuff.

Topcon doesn't work withCivil 3D 2020 (at least with the exchange ribbon) but does with Civil 2019. Maybe Magnet Field is the same way, if not saved as an older Acad format?
I don't know if the OP has MagNet working in Civil3D at all.
It sounded like he had only the Field software.
I do only have Magnet Field. I don't have much requirements for all the features of a full survey office package. It is mainly for surface to surface volume calculations that I require it. Magnet Field should be able to cope, I run a FC-5000 tablet with a wireless keyboard and mouse and it is not painful to do stuff.
I had recognised the need to be able to add some extra breaklines which is easy in plain AutoCAD as I can view it in 3D more easily. Having exported the file in DXF, added the lines in AutoCAD when I try to bring it into a new Magnet job it appears to work but if I try to edit the linework it sees nothing even though I can see the lines in MAP.
I have tried the recommendation of using AutoCAD 2000 dwg format and that doesn't change things. I do note however that for my file it brings in Layers points and one background element which i suspect is the problem. As far as i can tell the settings are not set to put stuff in the background.
I have tried exploding the polylines in AutoCAD but doesn't improve.
If Magnet processes the file on points alone the triangulation is unsuitable.
If I was more fluent in Magnet Field I may get to a stage where I don't take it out of Magnet at all. But at the moment it looked very cluttered if I had both surfaces in one file.
I wanted to attach the file at this point but the drop area says file type not allowed, i don't know why its only 500KB as well.
That is, basically, the way we would prep it for contractors.
Linework
-2d only, elevation of 0 for linework (check with isometric view)
-clean all junk out of file (audit, purge, laydel, etc)
-INSUNITS to 0 or 6 for meter (north of the border, eh) to prevent unit mismatch (if you change the units in, for whatever reason, it changes the units out.....0 seemed to work the best)
-export to 2007 DXF
-bam there's your backmap
Surface
-create surface however you want in C3D (point groups, survey figures, 3P's, featurelines, corridors, etc.)
-extract triangles and copy out
-delete the rest if it tagged along
-same nonsense about purging and units
-export to 2007 DXF
-upload to Trimble/Topcon software
-check for holes in the surface using their office software; fix in C3D if necessary (for whatever reason, sometimes you'd get one even after checking in CAD)
We always kept our point, linework, and surface files separate. That way the contractor could load into his job for the day only what he needed (prevented clutter, mistakes, etc.).
Uploading to Leica had a few extra steps, but the mists of time have fogged that over without someone giving me a refresher. I remember it was more of a PITA, though. Some contractors liked having 3P's to stake out services, but we discouraged it as it was more of a pain. It was easier to give them a csv stake file w/ a plan and let them interpolate.
Dunno if that helps, but it worked for us. It has been a bit, though.
The other reason I think I will have to take files out of Magnet Field is I don't think I can delete internal triangles. Example i'm working on is a re-construction of a Tank Bund there is no change to the Tank so I need to delete the Tank area from the Surface. Magnet Field is good for stock piles and that's about it, even then editing the boundary can be tricky because the software wants to be helpful and assume things rather than giving you having full control. I am on the look out for good value simple software that would cope with earthwork volumes even if it runs within AutoCAD.
