Looking for a good general use hand held GPS unit for recon and rough locations. I would also like to be able to upload / download coordinates from the hand held to my data collector and visa versa. Are ther any units that will do this? Thanks

I'm assuming that you have ruled out the smart phone?
Being able to actually see your position on an aerial, quad, record of survey, points plot, ect. almost eliminates the hassle of uploading individual coordinates for recon. With WiFii, Bluetooth, E-Mail, mobile hot spots, ect. it should be possible to send data to and from modern data collectors.

Correct, I do not have a smart phone. ( I have one foot in the door of old foeggyism) Just looking for a good sporting goods store hand held. I really don't even care if I have to upload / download coordinates by hand since I doubt I'm going to find a unit that will transfer via cable / wireless etc.

I hear ya. I have a cheap flip phone myself.

I used to have a iphone and used it for work. They are [hl]tremendously[/hl] useful for work.
I cannot emphasize that enough.
I hate the idea of how much time I spent on that stupid smart phone, not to mention the spying and tracking involved, but dang it was useful.

Get a data collector with an inbuilt GPS.

I've used a Garmin eTrex for years. Nothing fancy. It does it's job simply. At one time I was able to transfer coordinates by cable. Lost my cable several years ago. Now I just key coordinates to my truck GPS, and or my ProMark3. I use Earth Point to Google Earth for section corners. Convert Lat and Lon to state plane coordinates, than to cad. Generate coordinates in cad. Then back to Lat and Lon to the GPS units. Most of the time I'm just looking for section corners to tie into. Just get me to the park, I'm ready to play!

I would recommend purchasing an Earthmate PN-60 from DeLorme. They're easy to use, rugged, and have good map features. I think you can even get them with some sort of emergency text feature in case you break a leg and there's no cell service.
