I told my ole' surveying buddy that I was going "ground truthing' in Kingston MA and he said, "Didn't we used to call that surveying?"

I recall that the last time I posted about ground truthing someone mentioned that they missed Kingston, MA. Well I was there yesterday and found this interesting monument right near the job site. Actually I was setting up the GPS for a static observation and looked across the street and saw this;

I thought that you westerners/PLSS'ers should be able to rest easy knowing that we in ma have your point of beginning all secure!!!

Here's a picture of a later setup with the marsh that has to be 'truthed' tomorrow...

Maybe I can get some better pictures when I'm back onsite...

oh, and someone else asked about the sign that I leave on my GPS if I have to leave it unattended.

Keeping the honest people honest ;-0

Usually SWMBO gets the job of babysitting the GPS and she knits the day away happily. But on occasion I do have to leave it alone.

Looks like that concrete monument used to have some bronze plates on it that someone lifted off.

Good eye Jerry, I didn't even notice that, but the old bolt holes are obvious.

Where is that in Kingston (besides somewhere along the 42nd parallel) and how long has it been there? That would have been cool to see while surveying there.

Did you check the latitude of the marker?

Last time I checked an astronomically determined state boundary marker, its latitude was about a hundred yards different from geodetic. I tried to convert NAD83 to astronomic latitude using deflection of the vertical and the sign seemed to be opposite of what would explain much of the difference. I never did figure that out.

Hey Don,

That's just our backsight, not our POB. Everyone knows that!

You can't leave equipment unattended in Florida. It will walk off faster than you can say "steal my equipment". I had a friend who works in South Florida tell me that once two thugs pulled a gun on his crew and took their equipment.

Look what I found in Kingston>Answers

I have not yet checked the placement as to accuracy. Yesterday was a setup and recon day, with a few static occupations to establish my perimeter control. Tomorrow is data collection day, although I hate the thought of returning to the cape on Friday afternoon.

The location is on Landing Drive, just past River St. and opposite Park St.
N42 00 01.56 W70 43 08.09 per google earth.....

Nahant, Ron? What a pretty place that is! I've only seen it from the water, sailing from Scituate Habor to Salem one nice day...

Why weren't his people armed? I mean a shotgun for gators, pythons, moccasins, rattlers, copperheads, etc., does a good job on thugs.B-)

Danged Massachusettians

Despite the fact none of them pronounce the first 'R' in "HARBOR", you would think they would, at least, insert it when writing the word "HARBOR".

and how is Washington prounounced Warshington??? And how is Martha prounounced Mawther??? We went to an Episcopalian church in Dedham and the sermon involved Martha and the Rector said "Mawther" several times; I couldn't figure out who she was talking about. 😉

Meanwhile some people up in Oregon are waiting with anxiety while Don checks the position of that monument. You never know, they could really be---GASP---in California!

We recognize that some words don't need r's while others certainly do!

Come on, Don!

GET BUSY!

Southern Oregonians are waiting for the answer!

I noticed in the south 2 syllable words become 1, Oil is ul, for example, and 1 syllable words become 2, Hell is Hayel, for example.
