I'll start playing.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate getting advice to help cure my accute case of "rookieism"

Sounds like you are doing fine, NAD27 control can be difficult to mesh with GPS, be very careful with highway control and the vertical calibration, it can tilt cause you are calibrating along a line.

Remember that different datums work best with different GEOIDs.

Remember, if you have a linear area, and all your vertical localization is in a line, more or less, your vertical will be very messed up. It is almost guaranteed.

Vertical needs to surround a project, and needs to be a strong figure.

It is best practices to check into known control early and often.

Remember that different datums work best with different GEOIDs.

The GEOID will work best for him applied to the elevations not the datum, he is trying to emulate verticals from levels probably NGVD29.

Applying Geoid12, or 09 will give the best results for the project, using a calibration may really tilt the plane in ways not wanted.

My best results locally are when I use GEOID12 with existing first order bench marks, GEOID03 and 09 also work well.
