Probably something simple I'm doing wrong... but randomly I'll look down and the Leica has switched prisms on me. last time it happened: Shot the BS (round prism on tri-bs) ok, turned to FS (round prism on tri-bs)with correct prisms. Didn't check tight so re-shot again. This time when shooting FS it switched after it flopped for the second shot to 360 prism.
-all Leica prisms, hardware etc.
All equipment is new (6 months old).
Anyone have similar situation?
Thanks
I know some software has a check box that says use same rod height as backsite.
Maybe you have your backsite as one prism and your foresite as another prism.
Leica can have Prism's set for different shot types, i.e. one for 'Setup' shots and one for 'Detail' shots.
Sounds like it might have changed 360 after your backsite as it was expecting you to then go on to take a FS/Detail shot. It will default to the prism used for the last recorded shot of that type (Setup/other).
thanks for reply. everything was set up correctly (HI, prism etc.) and it started out with correct prism then switched when I went to take another set of angles.
That is what I'm thinking. I'll have to set up and create same situation and see what happens. Leica has several unique quirks. Just when you think you have something figured out...throws something at you to confuse again.
Thanks for reply
Henner,
This is a function of an option in SmartWorx on both System1200 TPS and Viva TPS. A good explanation of this option would be the setup situation when you have a circular prism at your backsight on a tripod or bipod and pole and it will stay there for checks or turning sets of angles. When you are surveying (topo or stakeout)you are using a 360° prism. So in the software there is a survey definition for how the instrument will act and what prism will be used and also a Setup definition for how the instrument will measure and what prism will be used for the backsight.
In the Viva SmartWorx you can check your settings by..
1. In the main menu select the Instrument icon
2. Next, choose TPS settings...
3. Next, choose Meas mode & target
4. You will see two pages available... Survey and Setup
5. In my example you will want to F6 (PAGE) over to the Setup page. In the example I am explaining, I have a -30 mm SECO prism at my backsight and I want to take the most precise measurement with ATR active. So, my target is set to the prism I create called -30 MM SECO. I have the measurement mode to Single and Target aiming to Automatic (no lock involved)...
When I eneter the Setup application to orientate my instrument the software makes the changes that I have in the Setup page for these settings...

6. Now select F6 (PAGE) again to go to the survey page. These are the settings SmartWorx will use after you exit the Setup application and start using the Survey or Stakeout applications. So this one is configured to use the Leica 360° prism in the Fast measurement mode and to use Lock to follow the prism.

The software is following these settings when you see the prism type and targeting modes change. The targeting settings are for a robotic instrument only.
These should be set in your Working Style the way you choose to work. That way you can always run the Working Style and have all of the settings change to how you want to work.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Does setting the Target settings overwrite the fact that it will default to the prism used for the last recorded shot of that type?
Or will the last recorded shot of that type overwrite the Target Settings?
In my experience it has been the latter.
I experienced the same type of problem many years ago at my former employer. I was using a Leica 1200 Smart Station, and using the Leica onboard software. I never could figure out why it was doing that.
It was very, very frustrating.
Thanks for the explanation and help. I'll check it out this morning.
Jimmy,
The version of SmartWorx for TPS1200 is exactly the same as shown above for Viva options. The filed for the settings were named differently but the options were the same.
Equivocator,
I think this is the best way to answer your question...
A. If you have the settings for the prisms and targeting set in a Working Style and run the Working Style the values are set exactly as in the working style....
B. If you manually change these settings then the values you manually change to will hold until you run the Working Style again or manually change them again.
Note: Some people do not use working styles to make things easier
C. If you are using say the Traverse application and on the backsight you manually set it to say a round prism and the foresight is set to say something strange like a mini-360° prism… the application will internally remember that these are you settings and will carry them until you manually change them.
The software is trying to help automate using a different prism at the backsight and foresight. If you use the same type of prisms for both just set the Setup and Survey measurement settings to the same prism.
