I've been using a Leica TCRA 1102 plus robotically for about a year now. Yesterday I wanted to record some angles in a field book and couldn't figure out how to get the gun to display the angles. The manual was of no help. Any hints?
Thanks!

Jim,

Are you using the built in Leica Software?

I believe the angles are displayed after pushing the MEAS button. I'll double check tomorrow.

Jim,

You can use the TPS1100 manually this way:

1. From the main menu select the F6 (MEAS) function key
2. You will now be displaying the current angle readings and can measure a distance
3. Once you are in this screen there is a function on the F5 (SetHz) function key
4. If you select F5 you can set your starting angle or select F4 (Hz=0) function key to set the circle to 0°00'00". After entering the needed starting angle select F1 (SET) to accept the value and return to the measurement display

To explain the F1(All), F2 (DIST), F3 (Record) in the measurement screen....this are used when actually recording the data to a job on-board the instrument...

F1 (All) - This would measure all angles and the distance and record the observation with the entered Point ID

F2 (Dist) - This measures the slope distance

F3 (Rec) This will record the current distance and angles that are displayed on the screen.

This allows for different measurement options for the Leica software. For example if you only wanted to measure and record an angle-only observation you could just point at a target and select F3 (rec). The database would record only the angels that are current.

I am using a TPS1100 simulator to help me give the answer. I noticed the default display mask is showing Horizontal Distance. If you would like to know how to display the slope distance or even both the slope distance and horizontal distance at the same time... I could email you some screen captures to explain that option.

I just tried this, and it worked fine. However, it wasn't working when I tried it in the field a couple of days ago. Not sure why, but the angle displayed didn't change when I rotated the gun.

I can't get this to work unless the instrument is aimed at a prism. When aimed at a non-reflective sight, it searches back and forth and then pops up a message about being unable to find a prism, offering only to retry or abort.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Jim,

About the angles not changing.... there is an angle hold feature on the screen where you can reset you orientation... it is on the F5 (Hold) function key in this screen. It is like having an upper and lower motion on an instrument but just an electronic version. Maybe this was turned on?

The reason the instrument is motorizing to look for a target is that you have the ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) turned on at present. You need to turn this off when you are not sighting a prism or if you just want to manually sight something.

You can turn the ATR of and on by...

1. From almost any screen select the grey FNC ( which stands for Function) just below the F4 key.

2. The F1 function key will now display the turn off or turn on ATR command

3. So you have to think in the reverse-swiss logic here....

ATR- = Turn off ATR

ATR+ = Turn on ATR

4. When the ATR is active you will see an ellipse with an arrow pointing into the ellipse. This will the third icon in the column of icons on the right side of the screen. If ATR is off this space will be blank.

Can I ask where you got the simulator?

Colin,

I worked for Leica Tech Support for 7 years. There were simulators for most instruments and the DNA from the TPS1000 up that were used in development. Since System500, System1200 and now Leica Viva there are downloadable simulators for everything. The ones for System1200 and System Viva are fully functional and are great for office work and/or training/support.

I can send you the TPS1100 Plus simulator if you have use for it. It is really just for support or making screen captures for instructional guides. You can input angles and distances. It still runs pretty well in Windows 7. I am not sure if it will work in Windows 8.

I could have sworn that I tried turning off both ATR and LOCK when I was in the field without success, but when I tried it just now (in the office), it worked.

Sometimes I think this gun just likes to mess with my head...

Many thanks for taking the time to answer this (and many other Leica) questions!

I would like it please - thanks for offering! colinfrank.67@hotmail.com
If you have the TPS1200 too...?
I am still using XP, actually...
Although the company I work for uses Sokkia robots, we also occasionally do work for a few different mines up north (I'm in canada) that use Leica's (1100 and 1200s) and they want us to use their equipment - which usually leads to alot of head scratching and "how do I do this now?" moments - not fun in minus 40 - or in a cloud of mosquitoes...A simulator would help to get up to speed before heading out. I've seen them on the leica website, but seemed to require having a customer authorization. Do-able probably thru one of the mines, but if you are offering!

Leica Simulators

I don't intend to hijack, but i have tried with no luck to get the simulators for the CS15 to run in Windows 7 64 bit. Will it run on that system? I have the 1200 simulator working, but we use the CS15 for data collection.

Leica Simulators

Steve,

I am running Windows 7 64 bit myself..... I am not sure why you would have an issue except for needing a full Administration login on your PC. The simulators for System1200 and Viva have all the needed files embedded for their install. It might be a Microsoft .NET issue. I have seen where you need to uninstall all of the Microsoft .NET on a PC and then re-install them. That has worked in the past.

Do you get any specific error message when installing or when you launch the CS simulator?

If you are sure you have a full administrator login and have time... uninstall the Microsoft .NET versions you have on your PC and then reinstall. You can find the download for version 4.5 at...

http://www.microsoft.com/net

Windows update will recognize if you need any updates to .NET if you go back to an earlier version

I figured out (sort of) why it wasn't working before: I had the data radio plugged in, and apparently the data collector was resetting things after every manual shot. Today I set it up without plugging in the data radio, and everything worked as expected.
