I just read a leap second will be observed on June 30:
Yeah, It Is Going To Be A Long Weekend
B-)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be ready.
Is it just me, or does anybody else feel a little whiplash when they do that?

I tried to post the official U.S. time widget but I guess it is not allowed or I don't know how to do it:
I figured you would feel it too, Nate.
It's inconsequential and unimportant to some, but for me it's a whopping 1000 milliseconds added to my 60th trip around the sun, so it's worthy of note. I just have to make sure that I'm either in repose or else fishing when it happens. Those are the two best ways to avoid leap-second whiplash. I've been through a few of these in my time, so you can trust me on this.
Just a helpful hint, a word to the wise if you will.
Is this going to mess up my Carlson software like the daylight savings time change does????!!!! 😛
The leap second is June 30 but what time?
They tell you the date then go on and on about why.
It appears it is at midnight UTC tonight (5pm on the west coast) from reading something else. At 23:59:59 they jump the clock ahead one second to 00:00:00.
Are you sure about the direction?
Second Coming 30-Jun-2012
I don't think a leap second has ever been subtracted from the current time.
23:59:59 then 23:59:60 then 0:00:00
In essence midnight is 2 seconds long.
BTW, if you have the latest Ashtech Promarks (500, 800), you need to update your software, NOW!

from the Bulletin:
UTC TIME STEP
on the 1st of July 2012
A positive leap second will be introduced at the end of June 2012.
The sequence of dates of the UTC second markers will be:
2012 June 30, 23h 59m 59s
2012 June 30, 23h 59m 60s
2012 July 1, 0h 0m 0s
Does that mean they add in a second? So like Paul said, midnight is 2 seconds long instead of the usual 1?
