Nate,

I picked up the 'Gurkha Army Issue' 'Gripper Handle Afghan Kukri'. Blade is 11", overall 16". I'm really happy with it. Last night out hiking used it to go through a 10" diameter tree that had fallen across the trail blocking it. Went through it like a beaver. It's a work horse. A machete would have gotten stuck. I like that I can just throw it my day pack or in the back of my vest. WW

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

Ok, I'm gonna bug you one last time, promise. 😛

Do you have any Kukri sharpening tips?

ETA: I see on the site that your particular knife comes with "Chakmak is used of sharpening the Kukri blade in its blunt." (sic) 🙂

I use an old aluminum oxide sharpening block to get a good edge going and follow that up with a diamond impregnated sharpening stone to put a fine edge on it. When it shaves hair off my arm, it's good. 😉 If the knife isn't too dull, you can always use another knife of similar hardness by drawing the two edges against each other and sharpen both at the same time. When I was a kid backpacking, one day I met a couple villagers on the trail. One of them pointed to my kukri hanging on my belt and I handed it to him as a sign of trust. He took it and pulled out his knife and proceeded to sharpen the two against each other. That's where I learned that trick. One of those moments that sticks with you.

The one I just received has a pretty darn good edge on it and I didn't need to do a thing to it.

Have yourself a good one Zapper.

Kukri Handle

Found I was jabbing myself with the corners of the tang extension so found some sleeping pad foam and wrapped it around the offending part and wrapped it up with some electrical tape. Seems to do the trick. Really like how it rides in the back of my vest.
