I am just now considering looking into applying for my license for Kentucky. I have a few questions that I thought I would ask here first.
1. Is a 4 year degree required?
2. Do you have to have a certificate of authority to practice land surveying?
3. How often is the state specific exam given?
I was just asked about getting licensed earlier today, and have not had a chance to start looking into it. I just thought I would ask my friends here first, before I started digging deep.
Thanks in advance,
Jimmy
> 1. Is a 4 year degree required?
No, but a 2 year degree is required, with a certain number of hours of surveying related classes.
> 2. Do you have to have a certificate of authority to practice land surveying?
Not if you practice under your name and not a business name.
> 3. How often is the state specific exam given?
The board will schedule a day for you to go to their office to take the 2 hour exam.
Thanks David
My response [msg]220774[/msg] to Paul's post about Virginia Registration may be of interest. Both the Cincinnati State and University of Northern Kentucky programs have online courses.

From the BOL website concerning licensure by endorsement:
"If you are licensed in any state, territory, or possession of the United States, District of Columbia, or any foreign country, you are eligible for Kentucky licensure provided the requirements and qualifications supporting your license equals or exceeds Kentucky’s requirements in effect on the date of issuance."
If you were licensed in Tennessee prior to 2011, Kentucky still had an experience route to licensure.
If you were licensed after 2011, then you would need to meet the current requirements found here. Among those requirements is a 4 year degree combined with a certain number of surveying courses and experience.
Certificate of Authority doesn't exist in Kentucky but to clarify what has been referred to, one can practice surveying under the title "Jimmy Cleveland, Surveyor" but if you have a company name of any other deviation, that company will need a business license from the licensure board. There are a lot of violations of that little detail mostly from out-of-state licensees.
Great program with Cincinnati State/Northern Kentucky University with their articulation agreement. The surveying classes are done at Cincinnati State(they only offer Associate degrees) and the remainder of the classes to round off the curriculum for a Bachelors degree are at Northern.
I wouldn't worry about all that. Call me instead, I'll cut you a deal.
