If I find a critical monument as deep as some of these photos show, I'm usually putting a rare earth magnet next to/under the monument, then tying flagging to the actual mon and holding it vertical as I fill the hole, so the next surveyor just has to follow the flagging down and the metal detector will sing out the entire time. Generally don't like putting a rod or anything at the surface which could be interpreted as an original monument.
Sometimes I've put a lath or hub with "KEEP DIGGING" and an arrow written on it in the hole as I fill it in.

A long piece of flagging and the depth of the monument on my map.?ÿ
@bushaxe?ÿ
Great idea.?ÿ Plus you could leave behind a nice, large, metallic spoon in the hole with flagging spiraling around the handle so they will have a handy tool to help remove the crumbs from that depth.
@skeeter1996 it's worse when someone puts ground level monumentation in because they didn't do a diligent enough job to find the original.
