My wife just ordered me an iphone 3 today. It should be in sometime next week. I currently use a Samsung Jack, and a Samsung Blackjack II before that.
I' ve seen alot of you mention that you used the iphone. I'm hoping that this phone will be easier to use for email ( I have pretty big hands). I will also be using it in tethering mode to access the internet on my laptop sometimes while in the field.
What are some surveying related apps that would be helpful? Also, is anyone using thier iphone with their laptop without a tethering package to access the internet?
How is the internet access on the iphone? I originally got the tethering package for those times when I might be in the field and may need to pull an additional deed, or might submit a file to OPUS while in the feild.
Thanks in advance for any tip, tricks, and suggestions.
Jimmy
iphone 3 - Land Surveying Apps
Just a note: I moved this to topic to Land Surveying because Jimmy is legitimately asking for some survey related apps for his new iPhone. if anyone has any help/advice for him, please let him know. Thanks!!
I like my iphone, but I have heard that several model data collectors cannot connect to it. it wont help much with fat fingers but the autocorrect usually helps.
I have one. While I have not used it for surveying applications, I do use it for everything else. Good apps for travel, managing my AMEX accounts, AAA, State Farm, Bank of America all have pretty good apps.
Takes care of e-mail really well and while I too suffer from the "fat finger" syndrome, typing on it has not been that big of a deal once I got use to it.
The camera is nice and I have used it quite often while performing survey field reviews to snap pictures of drainage structures, odd monuments or other things that I might need to add to or correct on a topo survey.
One nice app available is called Leaf Snap. It allows you to take a picture of a leaf from a try that you can not identify, upload it to the leaf snap server and have it try to ID the tree for you. Most of the trees in the database appear to be from the northeast part of the country but it still does a pretty good job.
And it makes a pretty good phone too!
A friend of mine uses the tethering on his Iphone to get online at his house when his satellite connection drops due to bad weather, which is often. He says it works pretty good.
I've had a Iphone 3S for about 4 months and love it. Still learning the cool stuff, but haven't loaded many apps other than ESPN & NFL, so I can catch the scores wherever I am. Also Weather, flashlight & a cool level app. There are so many it is just mind boggling. I know there is a "theodolite" app that looks pretty cool, but you have to pay for it (a whole $2).
I'm thinking of upgrading to 4G with tethering myself. It would be nice to rid myself of Frontier telephone, DSL, and all their BS taxes, but that is a big step. Then I hopefully wouldn't waste so much time on the internet.
My son dumped the Iphone and went with a Droid. Many others have too, so it may be worth looking into.
there is a good HP emulator
I use Theodolite Pro to take pics with date/time/LatLong/ stamps.
played around the other night importing NGS data points in a map.. still working on that
an app called GPS Kit seems promising for uploading and downloading waypoints.
Also, if you use the "photos" icon to look your pics, you can switch to Places and it will drop pins on the map and link to the pics on your phone. very handy if you have multiple 'similar' type shots to organize.
oh, and Direct TV app so I can watch NFL in a pinch.
Jimmy,
I have an iPhone 3GS but instead of the tethering package, I bought a MiFi. The upfront cost is a little more but the monthly payment is about the same. Plus you get more data usage. If you plan on using rtn, get the MiFi.
