After being out of state for the last I recently moved back home to Indiana. I'm an LSIT with 10+ years experience with ALTA's, topo's, easements, ROW's, plats - you name it.
However one thing I am noticing is almost every surveyor I have talked to is also in charge of (signing) construction proposed design documents and landscaping plans (something I have never really dealt with).
Is this normal? Are surveyors in Indiana essentially civil engineer's as well? I feel I may have made a mistake moving back, given my total lack of experience with landscape plans and proposed design stuff....
The only way to REALLY know is to read the statutes and regs in whatever state you are asking that question for. Legal definitions about what is surveying and what is engineering and what is landscape architecture vary WIDELY from state to state.
After you read these and think you understand - talk directly with a board member to see if your understanding is in line with what they have been enforcing.
This is one of the survey community's key problems with understanding who we are and what we should/shouldn't be doing.
Best of luck and let us know what you find.
As far as drainage goes...In Indiana, if it doesn't involve a pump or siphon, a land surveyor is allowed by state law to design it.
