Gps is great if you have modern GPS, I can make my robot fail but it is very
hard thing to do ( geodimeter robot). The Novatel great product GPS can be ABUSED to fail ie tree etc. sooner than the robot
But my modern gps is so SEXY easy compared to the robot that i dread the
thought of using the robot Which is slow BUT perfect.
Like any tool finding its limits is the key.

On the current project i have a perm base and i start the rover in the
drive through line at Tims and within 100 ft on site the rover has a fixed position
after fighting for a parking spot

Need robot switch to robot in 10 seconds when GPS will not do it "vertically"

All great tools

Hats of to

Novatel
Geodimeter
Carlson On gps but robot driver needs some work

Congratulations Ted

"GPS should never be used for boundary surveys period"

You have now posted the stupidest, most ignorant statement of your career. And THAT takes some real doing in your case!

Maybe you can follow that up with something like:

Electronic Distance meters (and Total Stations) should not be used for boundary surveys period (cause some folks don't know how to operate those properly either).

In fact, I wonder IF YOU know how to operate any modern equipment (except maybe your mouse, we already know you don't know how to operate a keyboard)!

Loyal

LOYAL--SORRY IF YOU THINK ITS STUPID--YOU DON;T HAVE THE EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD, BUT MANY OUT THERE DO--THERE IS SO MUCH WRONG WITH GPS--IT SHOULD BE CANNED--

THE OLD TRIED AND TRUE PROCESSES WORK VERY WELL ITS NICE TO TIE INTO A GOOD SURVEYORS WORK TRAVERS 1/M A MILE AND FALL INTO A DRILL HOLE DEAD NUTS ON--USING ONLY GPS THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN-EVER--MOST GABRONIS OUT HERE IN THE WEST DO EVERYTHING RTK, WHEN THEY SET A PIN 99.9 PERCENT OF THE TIME THERE .30-1.00 OFF, FOLLOWING WORK OF REAL SURVEYORS I AT LEST END UP ON THE CAP--TDD

SECONDLY , MOST SURVEYORS HAVE GOTTEN BLACK BOX LAZY-

WHEN YOU SURVEY ITS THE PROCESS STUPID !! NOT TO FEEL LIKE DRAGGING OUT THE EDM AND GOING THRU THE PROCESS TELLS ME YOUR SPOILED/LAZY--STICK TO DOING THE PROCESS CORRECTLY AND YOU'LL LIKELY NEVER SEE THE INSIDE OF A COURTROOM--MOST IN FACT THAT GET NAILED SPEND A WEEK MAKING UP FIELD NOTES AND SKETCHES TO COVER THEIR ASSES FOR THE SLOPPY RTK THEY REGRET USING--GPS IS LIKE HEROINE ONCE YOUR HOOKED ON IT YOU CAN'T GET AWAY FROM IT AND YOUR WORK GOES DOWN HILL 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME--TDD

Ted, Not all GPS is created equal.... some gives better results than others. I am not a fan of 5 seconds of FIXED time, and it is GOOD! Several minutes of observation time can improve results.

And, if you want to know what is going on, I suggest that you run a good traverse, and then re run it with RTK, and run it several times. This will give you in the field experience, and you WILL find differences, depending on time of day, and sat constelation location. Understand your tools.

Cheers.

Well what do you expect from a guy who has observed the earth's axis tilting from his hot tub? I wouldn't trust GPS either if I was certain the whole earth was shifting off its own axis. Can you imagine what that would to to the satellite orbits.

Bill

> When congress fails to fund GPS satellite replacements for so long that we lose decent coverage, or some rogue country decides to shoot at the birds.

That statement reminds me of the Mark Twain quote:

Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

I think the "rogue" country most likely to "shoot down" GPS is the U.S., specifically, the U.S. Congress.

I doubt if any real rogue country would try to take out the satellites. They need those satellites just as bad as we do. Their young terrorists are just like young people the world over. They wouldn't have a clue how to mount a decent terrorist attack without their cell phones, laptops, GPS units and other whizz-bang tech gizmos.

I have not done very many 1/2 mile Total Station Shots in a long time.
That is your fault, I know you're in Arkansas, but if I can get a "conventional" shot to verify my GPS occupation, redundancy will let me sleep at night! And, I have not Chained any 1-1/2 mile shots either, in a long time.
Join the club... the last time I chained a mile was in 1980!I know how to chain. With a 300' tape, plumb bobs, abney level, and chaining nails.
Another talent that is an antique.
Please pass this on to another generation PDQ!300' tape is gathering rust.
WD40 will help.
