For the first time in about 40 years, I've been turned down for a job that I sent a resume for.
I figured, if I got the job, my sailing would suffer(but that I might get a larger sailboat), and if I didn't get the job, I'd have fun all summer long... sailing.
I like my boat. Even though it's 28.5 feet long the main salon has 3.5 feet of floor width, I get to sleep like a champ, and the most concern I seem to have is whether or not to go from 220 grit sandpaper to 300 grit before I varnish.
I do miss surveying, but I think what I need is to get a job where I work a few days . . . a month(all at one time).
Kind of like vacation in reverse . . . after 2 years of vacation, I get two weeks of work... after 5 years of vacation, I get 3 weeks of work...
At what kind of surveying have you had the most fun? What kind of work kept your interest the best?
I love boundary surveys of old properties with really old descriptions and screwy verbiage that indicates intent.
Feel good, 3 1/5 feet of floor, 'deck', width is ample, especially if the boat is payed for and all equipment and the hull is in good condition. People have sailed around the world in boats that size or smaller, besides if you get thrown from port to starboard, there should be something to grab while traveling.

If you're looking for work...
find a firm that could use your experience...on a part-time basis, of course....
You DO have your boat...and boats have brightwork...and boats need love..and boats need regular outtings..and...

And I've found I can have as much pride in my varnishing as I have with my surveys.
Right now I'm making new navigation lights for the Bicentennial of the battle of Lake Erie.
I wanted to find a small bust of Oliver Hazard Perry, but instead got stuck with Teddy Roosevelt.
ANYWAY, I hope my boat looks good with all the 3" high acrylic, LED, Teddy Roosevelt navigation lights.

A bust of Perry would be ideal.
I can't help with that, but here is the best I can do-
I got it from the original, by Gilbert Stuart, which is in the Toledo Museum of Art.
Available light film photo, Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm lens.
He and General Harrison pretty much did the whole job in the old Northwest Territory (sorry Derek!)
Would love to see a picture of your boat!
I'm headed to Fort Worth Boat Club this weekend for a regatta!
What kind of boat? I had a Sabre 28 for a while
I think this will work.
The ladder was for my cat... sailing compadre.
THE BOAT
MY COMPADRE ON A CEMETERY SURVEY
I should say the boat picture was taken before the mast went up... it IS a sailboat.
I don't know my boats well enough but that sharp rake at the bow is distinctive. It's not an older Sparkman-Stephans is it? I can tell it's an older design because of that bow shape, maybe a benetau 28.5?
Newport 28 was a C&C all throughout
l don't know if I should feel good or bad...
ha, that would have been my next guess...a friend of mine had a C&C 32, but I don't recall the bow so raked.
