I have a Trimble 3603DR total station and I haven't used this type of total station before. While I am in possession of a manual, I'm still a bit confused about how to set a backsight.

Does anyone who has a bit more experience with this type of total station know how to do that?

Your assistance would be very much appreciated.

Sounds too simple for the question.

I'm sorry, I was in a hurry and I phrased the question in a confusing manner. What I was looking for was how to make it so that the point where your backsight is has a horizontal angle of 0 degrees 0 minutes 0 seconds. Most total stations I've used have a 0set option right on their interface. This one appears to not.

R,

If there's nothing on the gun to zero the HR, then you'll have to do it with the data collector.

On Trimble's site, the link for the 3600 manual is broken. The only manual I found is here:
ftp://ftp.geoteam.dk/Manualer/Trimble%203600/3600_1e.pdf

What type of detachable control unit does it have? Trimble, Geodimeter, Zeiss?

Maybe search for the 5600 series total station, I think the instruments have similarities in operating functions.

The following works with my model of the 3600. I am at home and not looking at the screen so my location of buttons may be left or right of the actual location.
Assuming you are using it without on-board data collection. (which mine has but I use an external d/c)
In the inst.exe mode one of the top row of buttons should be labeled on the screen as “HSET” I believe it is the 3rd or 4th left of the esc key. If you press this it will bring a screen up showing you the current angle. Below this you will have the following three options set, zero, exit.
To set zero: verify your sight, press the key associated with zero, and then the key associated with set.
You can substitute keying in an angle for pressing the zero button if you need to. Just key it in like you would on the old HP’s 45d 15’ 25” would be keyed as 45.1525 then press the key associated with set.
