Collect:

Patches, large sledge hammer, smooth face hammer, sandpaper or Emory cloth, hi-tin soldier, flux, small propane torch.

Using sledge hammer as an anvil, hammer the ends of the broken tape gently, to remove bends or distortions.

Sand the ends very well, to remove rust, paint, and corrosion.

Dip ends of tape in flux. Fire up torch, and get soldier ready. Dip end of soldier into flux. Gently heat the ends of tape, while applying soldier. They should turn shiny, when, tinned properly, on both sides.?ÿ

Place patch over ends of tape, and hammer it down closed. Hammer it tight in all directions. Place open side of patch up, and suspend tape over unlit torch, setting it so it is stable. Cut a piece of soldier, about 3/4" long, and lay cut piece into crack of patch. Coat piece of soldier with flux.

Now tape is supported at both sides, over top of torch. Fire up torch, and melt soldier, till it flows down into crack in patch, and leaves a small lump of soldier over patch. Being careful to not overheat.

You will end up with a good patch. They should last several years. Clean up the flux, and wash the area thoroughly. Spray paint both sides.

Modern way:

You forgot to charge batteries?

Let's just go home!

You left out the step where you make sure the foot marks are 1.00 ft apart before applying the patch.

Are you repairing the tape that was used to survey the property described in the deed that didnƒ??t close by 0.76ƒ??. Iƒ??m surprised how long the duct tape repair lasted.?ÿ

@fairbanksLS,

Aw, that's not reasonable.

We pull our tapes too hard for that.

In my best Jeff Foxworthy voice: If you spend $600 worth of billable time repairing a $150 dollar tool, you might be a surveyor.

12.00 is about what a tape patch kit costed. As I remember.?ÿ

Tapes and reels are selling on eBay for about $35.00 for a used 100' tape. A 300' one with patches recently sold for 38$.

Dad would have bought it, and put on another crew!
