The premier of the new series is on the History Channel. This isn't the one they did last year, it's a new weekly series. Definitely one for the DVR.

Yeeee Haaaaawww!
Free CEU's!
I know one thing for sure, there is a portion of the State line between Montana and Wyoming that has jogs in it and not the straight (curved) line that it is supposed to be. I know because I retraced part of it.
That portion is close to the Decker coal mine.

I caught it last night and it was excellent. Even had a segment that featured our friend Dave Doyle. In fact, it was one of the highlights as he explained what geodesy was to the host.
Personally, I think Dave would have made a great host for the entire show.
And another segment on the Mason-Dixon line with a surveying retracing and doing GPS on all the stones.
Most excellent production. I look forward to the rest of the series.
sounds intriguing - I'm sure it's awesome for those of you who know how to do this surveying! I might have to check it out!
It's really not aimed at Surveyors but more of a history of how the states arrived at their shapes and how some changed over time and with court decisions. Very interesting part last night on the breaking up of the Lousiana purchases into the new states. You will like it a lot, I would think.
yeah, I'm a history buff as well, I had it as a dual major with English in college for a while, but it was just too much, so I stuck to English. It is sad that most Americans don't know much about the country they inhabit, and History channel helps to rectify that deficit - more power to em!
Rats. And I just quit satellite tv. It's not worth hanging on to for one program that is starting up.
Maybe I'll buy the dvd's when they come out.

Based on your description, the episode you watched was the original from last year. There is a new series with the same title. The first episode of the new series, about how water shaped the states, aired last night. It's on again tonight at 7:00 pm and again at 11:00 pm, CDT.
Or watch it here.
Sometime Beer Leg poster and Surveyors Historical Society Board member Bart Crattie and his friend Bobby Cagle get a few of their 15 minutes of fame near the beginning of this episode.

Thanks for the link. Maybe I can download that to my tv somehow.
I watched the tail end of that tonight - didn't realize that was the start of the series or I woulda paid more attention!

Thanks Rich. I guess I missed this one last year. Looking forward to the series as it looks to be well researched.
Pretty good show. I caught the tail end of the original last year and thought I'd never see it again so I bought the book (from Amazon) but was left a bit disappointed. Sometimes the book is very descriptive, and sometimes they explain an entire state in one simple paragraph. They should have just called it "State geography for dummies;" it's that basic. But it still gets the point across. I recommend it for a quick, easy read.
