Not to hijack (I suspect the OP is out of cell phone reception anyway), but I followed up the the state Fish and Wildlife and the Forest Service. Neither agency is removing fish from the mountain lakes in my area. Sounds like it must have been a weird freeze or disease of some sort.
I have read of fish die-offs where the lake freezes clear, and a significant period of time passes where there is no snow.
Apparently the sunlight shines through the ice and prompts algae to grow, which produce oxygen that cannot escape the water. That particular environment can apparently be toxic to fish.
