We, in MA, kicked off the week with a little Rendezvous at the Boston Common.

As I said it was "little" or it started that way! The picture above is just after setup. That's my van, and most of my equipment to the right. Our "learning center" was the white tent to the left;

We had a 100' baseline to calibrate your pace and a small three legged traverse to run using a compass and pacing. This allowed us to explain a part of our profession using simple tools and then explain how it has progressed through the years by showing the K&E transit, Leica TCR 1105, and the Sokkia GPS.

All this was hands on experience:
Here are outstanding associate members Russ and Priscilla showing the use of a total station to MIT student, Trinity!

We did have the pamphlet and "swag" table.

Here's a view from the other direction.

It was our first attempt in years at a rendezvous and I feel it was a successful start. We had about 16 PLS's stop in and visit, many students, and several interested members of the public. I spoke with at least 12 different folks about surveying and at least one member gained a new client! We even had an unexpected guest!

Don
PS: Edit; I forgot to mention how cooperative the weather was!! Record breaking temps in Boston, 70+!!!!

GPS Day 2012

Not to hijack but who is going to participate in GPS Day 2012? DDSM and I have our Benchmark Staked out and will be observing. Here is a copy of the notification that I got about it.

GPS Day 2012 On Saturday, March 24, 2012 surveyors across North America will be hosting International GPS Day (fka NSPS Surveying USA) events to commemorate National Surveyors’ Week which begins on Sunday, March 18, 2012. Advanced Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment will be on display and simultaneously collecting data at sites throughout North America. The goal of International GPS Day is to give the public an opportunity to observe local surveyors in action and to learn more about one of the world’s oldest professions. Surveyors at each location will be available to answer questions about the event and to discuss the role of surveyors in the community. Anyone with a GPS unit (hand-held or otherwise) is welcome to join in the fun.
Please put the date on your calendar and plan to participate. Last year’s participants know how much fun this is, and have been anxious for this year’s information. We are coordinating our efforts with ESRI, and are hoping to have an interactive website, wherein each participant can enter their own location information, participants’ names, and possibly even photos. Website: www.gpsday.com is active, and additional information will be added as it becomes available. You are encouraged to process your data through OPUS prior to submittal, though it is not required.

For information about participation not included in website, please contact Bill Glassey: [email protected]
