My current project has over 35km of divided highway with 3 lanes in either direction.?ÿ I have been looking for alternative solutions for the lane line layout for the roadway painters.?ÿ Currently we are walking everything and it is very time consuming.?ÿ Does anyone have any suggestions to speed the process up??ÿ I found a product called "tinysurveyor" which is a GPS guided robot however looks like it isn't available in North America.

This brings to mind...

Two philosophies of tying into roads, r/w's and c/l's.?ÿ

1.) Tie mid of painted lines... That's all folks! (Easy to gps!)

2.) Tie all r/w markers, use r/w plans, and construction plans, and reconstruct c/I from that, and see "how far off the paint line is".

My philosophy is to tie both, and do a professional job... You know what I mean. But it takes time... And time is money...

Not sure what the line painters require there, but in these parts we just give them a marking paint spray dot the same color as the line every 40m on tangents and then all the necessary PIs etc.?ÿ Then all the corners on any painted meridians or special features.?ÿ For long straightaways I've used a quad or utv with the rover mounted on the side and just staked out the lines and blasted a paint dot with a spray wand wherever needed.?ÿ Final product has always looked good and I've never had a complaint.

I'm also 15lbs overweight....maybe I should just be walking.

we had it demoed on site. it worked fine and the highway is usually got good clear GPS by the time the lines are going down. the call bu the PM was come back with one that will do the "actual" lines. personally i dont think that's right. the tuck that paints lines is a much bigger beast. would be possible to adapt it but they are used to following paint marks and no harm having the robot out front. also allows a bit of sanity checking in case something goes wrong.

always need to stake out the bits under bridges, tunnels etc anyway

maybe you can get them to break in into the north american market. off the top of my head I think it may be a dutch company that hav developed it first

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately on this job we are required to layout every line at intervals of 5-20m depending if it is a straight line or a curve.?ÿ That's why I figure something that is automated would be much faster than walking every line.

I consider getting the opportunity to get in lots of walking to be one of the perks of the job. Can't stand sitting. (Har-har)

Okay, the Tinysurveyor is kind of cool.?ÿ I was afraid of what I might find doing a web search for it but luckily the robot was the first thing that came up.

If anyone finds a dealer for the TinySurveyor in the US or Canada, please let us know!

There are some of our construction jobs that are rehabs or widening of rural roads that includes an alignment in the plans that was built from aerial photogrammetry. Most don't actually fit and some of the plans actually say not to use them for alignment. It would be funny to paint the proposed centerline on the road for the Engineer and Inspector to look at.
