They are flat on top to weld to but have six studs sticking out the bottom. [/img]

Batter Boards - Good idea.

Personally I think it would be a good time to meet the neighbors and ask for some help....just like the old days.

I have found that a screwdriver, through the tape handle, is quite capable of handling the dumb end of the tape.

BTW "put all cross boards at the same elevation for best results"
