Hello all,
I am currently in the market for a new to me glonass capable base rover system. You are probably going to read this and think "what a cheap skate" but I cant justify paying big bucks just to have shiny new name brand equipment.
I have been looking at the Javad Triumph 2, Used Topcon Hipers, Used Spectra Epochs, new Geomax etc. I want to like the Javads (roughly $11,000)but there is not really any dealer support in case something goes awry. The new Geomax is a more money ($16000)but again not much in the way of dealer support. However I can get used proven Topcons or Spectras ($10,000-$15,000) and still be in the same ball park. I am coming from years of using Trimble R8-3,-2, and 5800 receivers and refuse to pay the ridiculous prices they now demand. What say you? like I said I want to like the Javad but have never had my hands on one and Im not too sure about the radio and the collector and software. There are tons of used hipers and support out there again never used one. And then there is the Geomax which from what I can tell is a rebranded leica and is relatively unproven. Also I would prefer to run Carlson and need to get 2 miles + out of the radios using a 15' antenna.
Thanks

I've gotten good and bad service from any brand of dealer, distance from my office notwithstanding.

GNSS systems ship easily, and I'll give Jason Scott at Klein Survey Systems a big vote of confidence if you want to give JAVAD a try. Also, the new JAVAD systems can be configured via internet connection negating the need for a dealer across the street.

The Javad units are the best for the money in my opinion. I have used just about all of the major brands and I feel the Triumph 2 base and LS rover is the best base/rover units available.

As far as customer support goes, all of the customer support comes from licensed surveyors who are using the equipment just about every day. The surveyors offering customer support for Javad are some of the smartest and well versed surveyors that I have had the pleasure of working with.

If something breaks or there is a hardware problem they (Javad) wants that piece of equipment back to see what went wrong and will send another unit out right away.

If you have any specific questions on the Javad units please feel free to contact me

Matt

Radio range is most often dependent on the topography between your base and rover.

I was in the market for an RTK set up earlier this year. I was hoping to hear a definitive on JAVAD, but it seamed the advertised
Triumph matchbox receivers weren't a reality for demoing or ordering. Are they being put to work by any actual consumers yet?

I chose to go with a pair of CHC X91+ receivers from iGage and have been blown away with the customer support,
to this day.

Mark Silver seams to respond to txt or email within an hour or two, 7 days a week, in my experience!

My local yellow/blue brand dealer appears to go dark after 4:30 on Fridays. Also, I'm pretty sure they now think I'm a problem child, and they would be right! Even my momma hates me.

Anyway

The X91+ has the same capabilities as the 220 channel R8 head, from what it says on the spec.

All I know is that the combo Base + Rover slay sections with canopy, and fixes are 99% on point as advertised, when a second fix chimes in after a few minutes.

The receive only whip antenna on the rover is nearly 16" long, and seams to do vey well when pushing the range over long distance through woods and over crests of hills. I use a 35 watt ADL to broadcast the base data. I hit 2 miles easy, with strategic base placement.

The only short coming with the units in my area is when I try to use the CORS corrections via internet with baselines that are upwards of 10 miles.
For a quick 1/2 mile shot it is okay, but I have seen .2-.3' of slop when doing redundant checks in areas with a little canopy.
That is why having the matched RTK Base + Rover was a must for me, as much of my work is in poor cell areas with canopy and over 20 miles from a CORS.
Then again, it is a Leica CORS network in these parts, so that could be part of it?

ive been through alot of GPS base/rover setups. the best bang for your buck in that price range is going to be a Hiper GA setup. i still use it to this day it just works all the time , reliable, durable and can run 14hrs on internal charge.

i have an epoch aswell. MEH.....batteries are annoying and whatever correction/multipath format it uses doesnt touch topcons.

We made the decision in January to go with the Javad Triumph 1 system. We love the system. I highly recommend Javad. I have heard that the new release of the Triumph 1 will have a chip that is similar to the Triumph LS.

I am also currently testing the Javad Triumph LS/Triumph 2 system. I have been satisified with it as well. I am still trying to decide if I like the collector on the head, but at this point I have hopes to purchase the system at the end of the test and replace my Thales ZMAX system and Trimble 5800 system (which might be available for purchase).

For those who do not like the data collector on the head of the gps unit, you can purchase a Victor LS which is just the data collector. It will have total station drivers built in as well in the near future.

The new Triumph 1 will also be able to track the L5 signal as well for those who may be interested in those units.

I think that the chip has more to do with the availability of more channels.

I was thinking that maybe the distinction is between ability to track, and ability to use in RTK solution. Perhaps the T1 chips need a firmware update before they can make use of L5 in solutions, but track the signal for post processing purposes.

Hi

I have been using South S82V base and rover for 11 Months for engineering surveys and found it to be very good equipment. If you can find a dealer it is worth checking out.

Uses Trimble/ Maxwell board and Pacific Crest Radio module, we bought ours with Psion controller with SurvCE, there is an S10 controller option (cheaper).
Our dealer set up and configured the Rover GSM module and included cellular data sim card. We tested and talked to other surveyors and found data network to be too limited in coverage and unrealiable in our work areas, so bought the base and rover.

The base was NZD $9900, and rover kit with controller and carbon pole NZ$13,900. About US$20,000 all up. Add external pacific crest ADL sentry radio option US$3000.

I hope the image is right way up, was taken near the bottom of the world in New Zealand. The background is border of olives and vineyards. 😉

Plumb,
I was in error. The new Triumph-2 receiver does not track L5, however, as you recalled from the spec sheet, the Triumph-1 has always tracked L5, as will the new version of the Triumph-1 (which has the same 864 channel receiver board as the new LS).

One nice thing about surveying in New Zealand in the old days was that the telescope image in the T2 was right side up.
