The Geoholics Podcast with hosts Kent and Trent had a great interview with Amanda Allred yesterday.?ÿ She is very passionate about struggles of women and minorities in the surveying professions.?ÿ She a really great lady, super surveyor, and worth the listen.?ÿ It is an hour and 30 minutes, but there is a little of sponsor stuff in the beginning.?ÿ?ÿ
Ive always given everyone a fair shake, and hired my first woman in 1986 to do field work.?ÿ Makes you think about the struggle of many who are not treated equally.?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿ
To be honest I can't remember many women applying for a job.?ÿ Probably one of many reasons that not many have become licensed.?ÿ Out of the four women I'm personally familiar with that worked as surveyors two got licensed.?ÿ A much higher percentage than the men I've know in the business.?ÿ I had a woman party chief in Charlotte that was a good surveyor and did most of the boundary work while the guys were doing the construction stakeout. I have always found it best to assign work to the crew whose abilities matched the job requirements.?ÿ She was happy and the guys were happy.
Not much I can do about how the public treats someone.?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿ
@fairbanksls?ÿ The following LS's off the top of my head in no particular order: Kathy Kelly and Louise Hooyer at DOT, with Louise being the CR ROW Engineering Chief.?ÿ Gwen Grevallis is DNR Chief Surveyor and Amy Orange-Possama DNR staff surveyor.?ÿ Karen Tilton in Fairbanks from Roen, and then R&M as Senior Surveyor and SR/RW.?ÿ Elaine Grey at Manley Surveys.?ÿ Linsey Vaughn, GPS Inc. owner.?ÿ Janice Zilko at The Boutet Company. Dominika Van Koten and Tasha Huhta at BLM all come to mind as women Alaska Land Surveyors I know.?ÿ There are more.
Kudos to those ladies for their accomplishments.?ÿ As BLM Chief Cadastral Surveyor for Alaska I'm sure you have had the opportunity to meet many fine PLS's.?ÿ My experiences are those of a very small fish in a very large pond.
?ÿ
I??ve met Ms. Allred. I??ll have to listen to the interview.?ÿ
