@chris-bouffard Really? Then please tell me what is True North? I don't know how to orient myself in regards to True North.
Amazing how frequently the phrase "True North" is used and yet it is almost a non existent concept.
There are many "True"s...what is YOUR Truth?
😉
When using GNSS equipment (base & rover), True North is obvious. But how do you align and set a total station (i.e. old Leica TCRA1103 Plus) to True North?
I can use a cell phone and "roughly" align the total station using that using either True North or Magnetic North, but what is the proper way to align the station exactly to True North best as possible please?
Thanks guys!
Total stations don't know north, they only know coordinates.
Or at least that's how I look at it.
But if you've done this enough you know how fast it's moving across the sky, you've tracked it many, many times.
Yeah, we did a solar observation once in school (still haven't had to do one in the working world) and I was surprised how fast the sun actually moves. In hindsight it made some sense though because it's what... about a thousand miles an hour at the equator.
I was surprised how fast the sun actually moves.
Hmmm? Does the sun move? That really complicates things! ; )

Hahah! Yes, sir! My homie Aristotle discovered this many years ago. And I was standing perfectly still behind the gun so clearly the sun is on the move!
I heard the earth was flat too.
I'm totally confused now!
I give up! UP IS DOWN, DOWN IS UP THESE DAYS!
You can get the EOP information from the naval observatory as well so that you can enter the chandeler cycle into the equations. Just FYI. Oh how I remember the days of my little radio and getting the time at the bong. Then 3 stop watches to compute the average offset for more precise timing. I believe that Dave Lehman had a program that was installed on a laptop that was very good and it if on internet would pull the time from usno so it was very nice. No stop watch needed except for redundancies. RE Buckner had a awesome book that you could use for all computations. Took my first sun shot under him. T-3 in Memphis.
@lurker Not many registereds on here seem to like 'true north' as a reference, from what I can read.
I guess if you were really hung up on 'true north', and had to have 'true north', you could hang one of these in your truck until you got tired of it.
@rj-schneider love it. I get a kick out of all the names for smelly things lol. But when i was in elementary school my teacher always pointed to the ceiling for north in geography class. So it has to be. I wonder if our fellow surveyors south of equator the teachers pointed to the floor.
