I'm drafting some maps for a friend ... so far about 4 a week.
Given the laughable issues that come up in the GIS department, I think I now realize what I really hate about surveying ... it's the idiot GIS personnel that have been given power to make our lives a living heelloo...........
I mean, one day they need a "cl", on a centerline, or an O.R. Vol. 22, as opposed to an O.R. 22. One day they want certain "types" of lines, other days they want different type of type.
Sometimes they accept simple pins found(with a more explainable legend), other days, they want each pin designated in place.
One day they want an "I.D. cap", designation, the next day they want to know the size and material of the cap ...
I'm sure everyone here knows what I mean.
The real problem is not really what they need ... it's the inconsistency.
Oh, I'm sorry ... I didn't check your map ... Joe did, and he looks for different things.
Doing these maps, I'm realizing the stress of trying to outsmart these demagogues, but, no matter how I try ... no matter how much I put on these maps, there's always "something".
I could say something smart, or I could read verse & line from regulations, but regulations don't mean squat when the power mongers are left to their "interpretations".
When I worked for the county, I had the rules and everyone knew what to expect ... after all, we had "written", regulations and I wasn't into personal idiosyncracies(sp) or outlandish ... ahem ... thinking.
Too many unlicensed, UN-SUPERVISED, little napoleons, that have virtually free reign to be godds of their domain....
rant, rant, rant, rant, rant

Stress is that well-known feeling that results from not choking the ever-loving s*** out of someone who really needs to have the ever-loving s*** choked out of them.
Post like that are the reason I prefer to remain somewhat anonymous. Or at least to the point that google won't connect it to my name.
There is nothing we can do about your situation but it still feels good to get it off you chest. It also lets me know I'm not the only one that gets frustrated with those in charge and have very little clue of what they are in charge of.
Thanks for posting, Carry on...

An approval review is a fact and code checking group. They are political seatings and self serving.
They are the last stand for those that have individual views against common sense.
Personally, I have yet to receive any information about how these groups legally have the power to make any decision about my surveying decisions.
I have not seen that my BOR has granted them any, and the BOR is who I answer to.

"Too many unlicensed, UN-SUPERVISED, little napoleons, that have virtually free reign to be gods of their domain"
Yup.
And it is getting worse, everywhere.
Nothing we can do about it.
Sux.
Looking back, I'm willing to bet this one issue was my main source of stress.
I had no problem doing the research and survey ... I enjoyed those aspects of surveying.
BUT! Finalizing a map and description ... trying to second-guess these idiots as to what stupid thing they'll ask for(before they deny the map/description), was fruitless.
I took no solace with the title company or the client also wondering what the heeelll was going on.
If it hadn't been for the year-in, year-out, daily constant issues with dealing with the ignorant napoleanic pie-in-the-sky idiots, I think I wouldn't have gotten out of surveying so fast.
There's something really wrong with this program ... especially so, when map checker "A", does things vastly different from map checker "B" ... and they are actually open about the differences ... like a "hey, he looks for what he wants ... I look for what I want ... and YOU can't do anything about it.
now my "arrows", aren't right.
I have arrows going to some segments, but now, a different checker won't accept open-arrows ... he wants "closed arrows", and the "Ac", that the other checker wants, now must be "Ac.", for this checker.
This seems pretty bad and unless someone drops a hammer(preferably on a checker's head), I suppose future problems with rogue GIS operatives will be worse still.
:pissed:
Our local gis gal physically got in my face today and angrily asked me, "Brad since when and WHY are you using line tables, they are so confusing?"
I said, "why not? Have a nice weekend". I turned around and walked away.
This was personal with her for some reason.
