During the winter snow or shade works well. Here in Colorado the snow on the north side of my house is there till May. But in the early spring when it warm in the day and freezing at night, I usually drill a hole in the morning when the ground is frozen with a masonary bit on the cordless drill to get a little more surface area on the ground.
