I found this at found monument

I could not find any NGS station that was supposed to be at that location.

Was it likely moved there by someone?

It's not NGS ....

Dang, not only was the monument in the wrong place, but it had the wrong agencies cap....;)

Actually, maybe you're right. It was a uscgs monument that they happened to use the same naming designation on as one NGS monument in a completely different location.

(by the way, when I clicked on the link, I got a big map of the United States...so I'm not sure where the link meant to direct me).

What Does The "AND STATE SURVEY" Imply?

Seen other monuments where they do not belong.

Lafayette College engineering students way back when used USGS caps on "City of Easton" boundary monuments.

The Chief of the Louisiana Geodetic Survey (LGS) that existed during the WPA was Mr. Robert Frost. I don't think he had any relation to the Robert Frost that is registered (now) in Texas and Louisiana. I've got all the records on microfilm that still exist, but it's a fraction of what they actually surveyed. We have more coordinates than observations for Louisiana, both horizontal NAD'27 State Plane as well as SLD'29 elevations. All up to date ... as of 1934 or so.

Every once in a while we'll get an inquiry about a recovered LGS monument of which we have no records. No telling how many still exist that have unknown position values.

Yeah, I can read, but type US Coast and Geodetic Survey in your search bar...what comes up? NGS. These monuments are essentially owned by NGS now, right?

I couldn't find info on it at NGS, but I was hoping someone was more educated on these things than I am. I see that people are able to make comments...

Sorry about the location map, I was using my mobile phone, this should work better.

47.617423, -122.212470

This monument is going away...if someone took it from somewhere else and used it as a lawn ornament, I don't really care about it. I am just curious how to find information about this monument. The article answers most of my questions.

Thank you, this is educational.

Finding actual NGS published control in this part of the world is pretty hard sometimes, and I don't like the idea of making it harder. But, if it isn't published, it is of no use to man nor beast.

I kinda doubt it. They would have had an armed guard and rented barricades to keep anyone from using it during shutdown. 😀
