better wear your back support when carrying the rod.

Wow, an 8-foot retro-reflecting prism! That's impressive. I wonder what the scrap value of the BK-7 optical glass used in those things would be? Might we worth buying the package just for the prism. You could always just throw the instrument away and you'd still come out ahead.

well I did not find what yo are talking about.... any clues?

Dane, Mark's keen eyes zeroed in on Kit No. 21113 that advertises, among many other features:
> - Pole and Single Prism with Sight Pole and 8ft Prism.
My belief is that it is a ringer planted with that supply house to discourage moonlighting among DOT staff. :>

THANKS KENT, I WAS LOOKING FOR A PHOTO SILLY ME.... I WAS HOPING TO SEE AND 8' ARRAY
LOL

Actually, Kent, we DOTers have embraced reflectorless technology. This package is apparently for those who reject it, in a REALLY BIG WAY!

Well, we are gratified that there is a little buzz about the ad.
What we were really trying to accomplish is to give those guys who are looking for an excuse to purchase that great big 4X4 truck for a survey chariot a compelling justification for SWMBO. After all, it would take quite a rig to haul an 8' diameter retro prism around.
Of course that doesn't reckon with any of the other issues that might arise...
We may have to add a line of trusses for anyone who is trying to lift that prism.

Jerry.
I used to have one of those 8' prisms. Turned it the wrong way into the sun and burnt up 40 acres of crops, the survey truck and two power poles. You gotta be careful with those things.

Yeah, why would anyone need all those tripods and prisms if you can just shoot the fence post beside the right-of-way marker? Close enough for anyone, right?

Hey, I was just trying to keep some innocent soul from actually buying an 8 ft. prism.
For Reeeeeeaalllyyy long shots, you need this...An interesti
An interesting observation is that if you had this prism, your EDM range would not be greatly extended.
Once past the point where the prism fills the field of view of the instrument, the light disperses as distance squared on the way out and distance squared on the way back, giving a fourth power of distance formula. Reflected signal is proportional to area or diameter squared. So, ignoring atmospheric absorption, a 96 inch dia prism compared to a conventional 2.75 inch (effective area) prism gets you
sqrt(96/2.75) = 5.9 times the distance.
That's one reason you can't ping the Lunar Retro Reflector array with your total station.
I was the one that made the typo, but I can also poke fun at myself better than anyone:

WOW!!!
Chase has the biggest prism of all!!!
