My name is Allen Robberson and i Work for Sandis in Northern CA. We just purchased 22 leica captivate CS20. I was wondering if you could email me @ arobberson (at) sandis.net I have some questions about options in captivate. We are having some real issues.

Thanks Allen

Hi Allen, any chance you would be willing to expand on the issues you are having. I have purchased a CS20 as well and hoping that it will not be problematic.
From the demo I did I really liked it. Thanks in advance.

There is a big screen that one can actually see and larger buttons that you could actually push one at a time!

but when you want to use a a symbol from the keyboard you have to hold the (FN) key them that key with the symbol you want to use

I am a SurvCE and a Fieldgenius user and I see the Fieldgenius a way better in terms of coding. Fieldgenius provides very handy and very fast coding environment. I call it visual coding. With both Leica and Microsurvey under same roof, it comes not a surprise to me to see the Leica Captivate featuring strong concept similarity with the Fieldgenius. As a Leica user, I am happy and excited to see the Fieldgenius features onboard the Captivate. In fact, Captivate provides better coding feature in my opinion.

As another Field Genius and SurvCe user, whilst liking FG Coding it has a way to go.
I came to the two CE softwares from my Nikon onboard software where Coding was intuitive, with a memory, and it followed a patten that allowed easy picking of common previous used codes.
Whilst FG allows one to chose only the Codes in use and once a letter is typed it offers suggestions, with even smaller screens like Allegro's the Nikon (TDS) way would offer immediately a few very recently used Codes.
It allowed in effect template use where (egs) fence, verge, edge bitumen, centre, edge bitumen, verge, fence and return was offered in an ongoing sequence without user input. One could always over ride.
That was very quick surveying and one reason I hung off going a separate data recorder for ages.
If the sequence was interrupted and a new one recognised then that was picked up on.

Does anybody know what the internal long range Bluetooth installed into CS20?
Is it the same as a CS15 external one or shorter.

Just reading through this, I can see that the full functionality of Captivate is yet to be explored. There are lots of things Captivate can do which is not turned on by default. You don't want every option right there in front of you all the time, just like you don't have an icon shortcut on your desktop for every program on you computer. (Well I know some people do).

If you want to put in offsets, while in the measure screen, select "fn" then "Settings". Tick on the box for offsets. Now an additional tab is available on the measure screen which handles the offsets. Just remember that sign convention is always relative to the Total Station. The easiest way to remember it is

Length - positive adds to the horizontal distance, negative takes away from the distance.
Cross - Positive adds to the horizontal angle, negative takes away from the angle
Height - Positive adds to the height, negative takes away from the height.

As for templating, make sure you select the coding tab, then press "Tools". You now see a whole heap of options for templating codes. You can Save/Load templates and select the survey method of your Template, Zig-zag or same direction.

CS20 to an RH16, typically 450-550m without the video being streamed and 250-300m streaming video. There is an expansion pack available which will give you 1000m (no video streaming, 800m with video).

Eric, when you have the code selected, just use the left and right arrow on the keyboard to change the string number.

Just purchased a cs20. Coding is great in the device. But try and get a basic ASCII file off the thing!! Can't get a simple xyz and code+string out of it! Leica really over complicates the most basic of tasks.if you code in carlson with a string number when you export... funny thing is it exports the number and the code.. thought that was a basic requirement of most software platforms. Leica seem to have some other way, at the moment I have no clue how to get my linework out of it without doing a dxf export. I need to export the Observation data into my software along with my coding string numbers and attributes. Come on leica have a look at the competitors I think they all are way ahead in this.

Fin, are you wanting CSV, Tab or Space separated? Are you wanting "TOP01", "TOP1", "01TOP", or "TOP 1". I have numerous stylesheets that can do these, I just need to know which way you want your data. What CAD package are you sending the data you?

I've recently got a Leica TS16 w/ the captivate software. As a new robot owner, I am impressed by the tracking and searching but have come across a few things w/ the D.C. 1) It allows you to overwrite points without prompting you, this is scary, can this be changed? It seems like it wants to readily collect multiple measurements then average them or something. It would be nice if it operated like survey pro where it prompts for the next point number. Any way to change this in settings? 2) I really don't like the huge carousel in the main screen where you can so easily switch into a different job. Also scary. It doesn't make sense that they'd create the program this way as changing jobs is something you might only do zero, once or twice a day. I'm guessing there is no way to change this 3) the last thing that is annoying to me is that while you can set it to prompt after the shot of the description to be stored, it doesn't let you change the description after the shot. Any way to change this?
