I have a spreadsheet that I need to assign to a drawing, or parts of a spreadsheet that I need to assign to a drawing. Copy and paste ain't cutting it. Is there a way to bring in a xls or xlsx into Carlson Survey 2008 as a block, image, or something else?

TIA

drag and drop and select LINK HERE when you have the chance. I keep the xl file in the same directory with the drawing.

OLE

I don't have that version of Carlson so I can't give you specific directions.

It might also make some difference as to the CAD engine you are running. You using the Stand alone with the OEM version of AutoCAD or did you buy full AutoCad and using that as your engine? Intellicad?

What Dane describes is known as OLE (Object Linking and Embedding). The help file should have some more detailed information on that.

Be aware that using OLE can cause some drawings to be a bit flaky so use with caution.

The big advantage to OLE is when the original spreadsheet changes, you can quickly and easily cause the version in your drawing to update as well. Years ago I had one set up to update every time I opened the CAD drawing. On opening the program went and checked for the latest version of the original document embedded.

If you don't need the spreadsheet information to update in the future you might instead consider doing a screen capture of the portion of the spreadsheet you need. Then you can copy and paste that information just like it was a photograph.

I did that a few years ago when the county wanted to see the grade along an existing road. I created a point group of the centerline points, did an inverse routine, took the resulting data print out, put into a spreadsheet that calculated the stations and grade along the line. I then did a screen capture and pasted right into the drawing. The whole process took 10 minutes tops.

Hope that helps.

Terry Dotson at dotsoft.com has an application available for inserting spreadsheets into dwgs. Terry worked at Carlson for a number of years.

I have a solution involving the "PasteSpec" (Paste Special) command but the solution requires upgrading to Carlson Survey 2010 or later. Furthermore, it is along the OLE lines mentioned earlier but rather than getting an OLE object (and the "quirky-ness" they sometimes produce), the result becomes a "Table" object:

Once in the drawing, the Table entity can be right-clicked and you'll see an "Update Data Table Links" option that permits the updating of the information in the original spreadsheet back into the drawing.
