There are a couple guys around here who sometimes will use 2" alum caps on the 5/8" rod, with all the info, but they never punch them. The excuse is "..just use the middle, the point is in there somewhere...".
The jokes really started when we asked them "why not just use manhole covers, the point is in there somewhere". One guy said they were to heavy to carry around.
Most of us use plastic caps on 5/8" rebar. There is one guy who told his crew that the hole in the middle is for air pressure relief when they put them on, and does not necessarily locate the point. True
