Has anyone ever done a detector depth ranking? Using type of monument and a 1% to 100% power ratio? If so, could you give the brand and model #?

Was finding some stuff the other day but it had to be several feet deep. Just not sure how far. Trying to estimate it.

Also, does soil conditions effect the detection?

Thanks.

The original Schonstedt would pick up a 3/4 inch x 24in iron pipe 8ft underground.

Used one to follow a 1/4 inch wire tracer along a 6in pvc average depth 6ft.

That was in the early 1980s using headphones, don't know how that stacks up today.

B-)

I think using a magnetic locator is one of the art forms of surveying.
I've been using a 52GX most of the time so that is what I know.
I don't think you can accurately tell anyone how deep or what they may find by a chart, even if the data was compiled scientifically. Nowadays I have a pretty good feeling for what I'll find, how deep, and sometimes even if it's leaning**. You can only learn this by experience. I got mine by looking for EVERY lot corner in a town of about 1000 people. Most of the town was being dug up due to lead contamination from the local industry spreading cinders on the roads throughout the years. Get a job like that and you'll become intimate with the sounds of your locator.

**Having an idea of what might be under the surface should not preclude you from digging it up. Its better to prove the corner your looking for is not there than to pass it off as junk, later to have someone prove you wrong.
