Once we discovered a critical bar/pipe had to be under a stack of concrete blocks. Don't know why, but the guy had a few hundred of your common 8x8x16 blocks stacked somewhat neatly in what he thought was the corner of his tract. Not sure how many we moved to find the monument, but it was far too many. Of course, after getting our shot we put them all back before heading off to the tract we were surveying.
We were somewher in West Texas. Cobby Tubbs pointed to the top of a wooden post, about 6 inches above the surface and said that the pipe was at the base of the post and the post was about 6 or 7 feet long. When we were done, we couldn't see out of the hole.
Dug a monument box w/stone out of 2+/- feet of asphalt. That was fun, dig the box out then try and get all the asphalt crap out from around the bolt just to open it.
Wasn't there at the time, but my boss was telling us about a canal monument they dug out of the tow path. Of course they had dredged the canal and had 6+ feet of spoil on the path. He is 6'3"ish and couldn't see out of the hole. I always dread starting to dig for canal monuments but haven't had to go beyond 4 feet.
