Here is the online version of a story I authored which will be in the next issue of The American Surveyor. Kurt Luebke and I have met several times in the Black Hills to search for USGS monuments using 114-year-old descriptions. It is an 8-hour drive for me and a 10-hour drive for Kurt, but it's the way we like to spend our vacations. We first connected with each other through the old POB message board. One small typo on the cover text should read "USGS Control in the 1890s" instead of the 1880s.

got my copy of American Surveyor this week - really liked the way you presented the historical info - great job. The other articles you have linked us to are also great reads, thanks for presenting a side of our work that rarely gets attention, you make us proud Jerry!
