Another old bench mark found in the Black Hills. The original description stated that it was 5.25' from the section corner, whatever existed at that time for the physical monument. We measured 4.3' between the bench mark and the aluminum cap established in 1982. I wonder if the surveyor who placed the aluminum pipe/cap had access to these old USGS notes? It's not fair for me to make an assumption that the section corner is currently in the wrong place since I don't have any notes stating how the section corner was established and if a physical monument such as a stone was possibly there, but I did think "Hmmm....." when I noted the difference in distance.
Jerry,
Thanks for posting here!
You are second only to Bill Gates, in people who's job I'd like to have.
Third is Daryl Moistner, but only because I hate mosquitoes!

If you hate mosquitoes, you don't want DM's job. Every surveyor I've ever known that has spent time in Canada, Maine, or Alaska all commented on how vicious and unrelenting the black flies are in season.
I forget where I saw this picture.
I just found this forum yesterday; I was wondering where everybody was hanging out since it appears they were not at the RPLS forum!
I am happy to say that even though Jerry and I are seperated by about 1000 miles; our common bond for searching out history has brought us together for 2 historic monument expedition's.
Jerry keeps notes for any monuments that he stumbles upon and creates these great short stories with photos for all to view. My wife would be very concerned if we lived any closer together that the searches would become even more epic and often.
Thanks for continuing to share Jerry.
