I am still making rookie mistakes.?ÿ Thanks to @jim-frame for his recent inspiration and for giving me the confidence to confess this rookie mistake of my own.?ÿ I set the orange capped rebar in April this year.?ÿ Today I discovered that I set a pin cushion.?ÿ Oh for shame.?ÿ It never occurred to me to search at this location for a previously set monument (note the previously set yellow one).

@richard-imrie

Yea they placed it offline and the conductors pulled it in line. Seen this happen after ice storms where they're in a hurry just to get line up and stick the pole just any ole where. Or the pole broke off there and they stuck it to the side. It would be cool to get a shot down the the line. Maybe if Brad goes out there again he could take a couple of pic's.

Brad, looking at pictures 3 & 5, those pins won't be the long. You get to start over.?ÿ

Recently, I was sent photos of 3 of my pincushions just 8 months ago, with the question why? Of course I have no excuse especially since I searched for monuments diligently (in the snow) before setting mine a few inches away.?ÿ

Incompetence? Rookie error? Or Veteran Mistake?

If you correct the mistake, pull your pin, and humbly revise your plat, you have resolved a VETERAN MISTAKE. if you refuse to fix it, and argue that your survey is better, or that you don't make errors, THEN you have made a Rookie Error.

?ÿ

When I make my presentations about the illegality and egochaos of pincushions, I spend fair time talking about my own rookie errors and veteran mistakes.

?ÿ

I know one 70 year old licensed 40 plus years who still makes rookie errors. He farts pincushions all over my state whenever his truck stops, then cranks out plats with statements that both board rules and BLM manual REQUIRES him to fart pincushions. (Board rules and manual say no such thing) this is licensed rookie errors on steroids.

?ÿ

@brad-ott in another 20 years you will be my age and Probably make another rookie mistake or two, stuff happens.

a few months ago I was tasked with laying a line on a sub-floor, Magnetic North, for floor tile orientation.
Simple, used my quality 6" compass, took several readings, nailed it. Then "how about Geodetic North too?"... easy, looked up the declination for the lat/long... 11?ø 03' and scribed the second line on the sub-floor. Guess what? I turned the angle the Wrong Way.?ÿ Effing rookies!
Now I have to look at it until the tile guy comes (yep, my floor)

Pull the other pin, recycle the plastic cap; you can reuse that rebar for your next project.

@jules-j Many times the replacement pole goes up where they can drill beside the existing pole and they will saw the old pole off at the ground.

@brad-ott

Offline to get the required setback from the road curve? Presumably it was installed plumb then as others say, got pulled over by Mother Nature. (Down this way, it would be technically described as "on the piss".)?ÿ

One of the little-known facts about pins, they can have their polarity reversed, by hard pounding.

Touch a magnet to the top of a pin, after hard pounding, and it becomes much easier to find.

Thank you,

Nate
