With the advent of fast and lightweight tablet PCs, Civil 3D is I guess a very powerful platform for any data collection system.

Is there already a Civil 3D based data collection system now commercially available by the way?

What do you mean by civil 3d based? I don't know that i've ever seen any "data collection system" designed specifically for autocad or any other program. points collected in the field have always been "3d" if you are carrying elevations....

There are commercial data collection systems that run in AutoCAD like Carlson Field, 4Site Survey, Leica FieldPro. I know nothing that runs in Civil 3D.

I know the Florida DOT has released a new version of their data collection program EFB. Supposedly one of its goals will be to process the field data and write it out in an XML formatted output which could then be sucked into Civil 3D.

In my opinion, with Civil 3D at your disposal in the field while surveying is power, versatility, elegance, and sustainability to the highest level. I can't imagine the power of dynamic objects.

I guess the SurvCE supports LandXML.

I don't know how Sinc sees the market. He's in the business and I know it is just a matter of doing it for him. 🙂

Civil 3D is there for you to use.
Someone has to create the "seed files" or data base tables and set them up to work within the software.
All the styles and that kind of front end work has to be done before the data collection can work.
What I am saying is that Sinc can have you all set up and going without you having to create all that stuff yourself.
What you want is the most automation you can get in data collection.
It is good for efficiency, for meeting standards and for Quality Control.
If you are working well on a system, no one can compete with you to get the job done right and done quickly.
Learning what you need to know in Civil 3D and then setting everything up yourself will take lots of time and lots of R & D.
Forget that and start making money now on Topographic work.
