I might switch from surveypro. Anything I should know/consider before making a decision?

Survey pro was just so easy, it just doest communicate with my Carlson desktop.

Any bugs? Annoyances? Pluses?

If you are talking about the Carlson branded DCs, then I will say that I have been using the Carlson Surveyor2 for about a month, and it is hands down the best DC that I have put my hands on. I played with several manufactures DCs over the last year, for short times at conference and at a dealer. I was upgrading from a very old TDS ranger, and then from a Topcon FC2500 (which is now will be for sale)

I tried the Carlson Mini, but I thought it was too think for its size. The S2 fits in my hand nicely, the buttons are responsive, screen taps nice, and is bright. I would like to have had a stylus storage in the case, but in the strap is getting me by.

Thanks. Your ranger was running surveypro? And you like this software better?

We used to run Rangers with Surveypro. We switched to the Carlson collectors about two years ago. It took a little while to get used to things being named differently, but it really wasn't all that bad of a transition. We have two Surveyor+ collectors and a Surveyor 2.

They've worked well with all of our equipment (Sokkia and Leica total stations, Carlson robot, Topcon Hiper Lite GPS receivers). If you're running Carlson Survey on your computer, it's really nice to not have glitches from converting from another data collector raw file type.
Also, I've found the Carlson data collector software and desktop software to be pretty easy to just pick up and start using. As I already said, it takes some getting used to things being named differently, but in general things make sense and SurvCE is rather straightforward.

I have found one strange bug. Every so often when it's plugged in to the desktop to download files, it won't connect. You can plug it in and unplug it all day long, but it just seems like the computer won't recognize that the collector exists. Reboot the collector and everything is fine again. It seems to happen every few months at random.

At the end of the day, it's a data collector. They pretty much do the same things, the manufacturers just have different names for the same things. If you already run Carlson on your desktop, you'll probably be very happy to also run Carlson data collectors though.

Strange your post was above mine, anyway...

Yes, our Ranger is running a pretty old version of survey pro. There are some things I like better about the software, mainly the simplicity. But you can see that the SurvCE is so much more advanced. IE: recently I was staking a line and wanted to space the stakes the same, no more then 300' apart, SurveCE has that function built in, I just stumbled upon it - way cool, and so much easier in the field.

I have the Geo version, and recently got the internal GPS working with SurvCE, so I will be able to use the DC for recon, and setup the full GPS when I am in the area I need to search more closely. The DC and software are working well with a set of Javad GPS, Topcon QS, and standard TS.

As Keith said, it does take some getting used to in the slightly different terminology. I was able to pick it up and pretty much start using RTK and TS without any training whatsoever. Just be prepared to look something up in the manual or on the net if you have a questions and you will be OK.

Rich - I have five crews running TDS SurveyPro in the Ranger 3L and we recently purchased a couple of Surveyor2's. We love them and find them more user friendly.

I have 2 Allegros with SurvCE, 1 Allegro with Fast Survey and a Allegro2 with SurvCe. I download with a serial cable from all 4. The earliest Allegro was purchased in 2003, still runs fine, screen has been replaced twice. I don't like screen protectors. All of them are still on their first batteries. The new Allegro2 has been improved considerably and has a qwerty keyboard and a good display.

CarlsonCE is painless and good.It runs my Leica TCRA1103 Plus robot, my Leica 2003 and my new Javad RTK. The Fast Survey was written for the Asntech RTK and works as well. If you are going to do slope staking I would suggest their Road option. I used to use Tripod Data, but got tired of it. Carlson rocks and it interfaces well with Carlson Survey.

I use survey pro and it communicates fine with my Carlson Survey just fine. Survey/Data Collector/TDS. On my Ranger I have to tell it I'm communicating with an HP48, which is weird, but the Carlson software tells you that this setting is necessary.

Get a ranger with survce. One of my crews has a new ranger with surveypro and the other crew has a surveyor 2 with survce. We have had them both for about 7 months and the only reason we didn't get 2 of the same is because each crew chief likes the specific software. The only reason I'm saying get the ranger with survce is because the ranger is more durable. My crews take excellent care of equipment and the crew with the surveyor2 came in a few weeks ago, handed me the data collector along with 2 buttons that fell out of the keypad. The buttons appeared to look fine but would not stay in the spot where they fell out. I asked my guys how this happened and my chief said when he pulled it out of the bag they were gone and they keys were sitting in the bag. Sent it off to get repaired under warranty, just got a call saying it wasn't covered that the keys were torn off. Anyone else had any problems with buttons coming off the surveyor2?
