I am looking for a quick way to get a bunch of Carlson jobs (crd files) into MS Access . I really do not want to export the jobs out of Carlson. I know these files are binary . Is there a script out there to convert these files to CSV or similar.

There isn't a script file that I'm aware of but you can get CRD data out to MDB one of two ways:

  • Points -- Coordinate File Utilities -- Convert Coordinate File (you'd need to use a POINTS.MDB file name), or,
  • Points -- List Points (with Report Formatter) that allows the points being listed to be sent to an Access MDB database, Excel XLS or CSV format.

I hope this information helps.

What I would like to do is import all my crd files into MS Access then sort out certain points, and then send them to google earth . I want to send all my files from when I started using GPS and than map all my control . Access allows some pretty neat filters to sort and isolate data based on certain conditions. So no way to convert crd outside Carlson?

I'm not aware of any external application that would convert a CRD to MDB or XLS.

I must be missing something here. A CSV file is a "comma separated value" file, right? Pretty much the same thing as a comma delimited txt file. You can open both, the same way, in Excel. So, export the crd file as a comma delimited (or a space delimited file (both will work with Excel) then open the file as a comma delimited txt file in Excel?
I just tried it and it worked just fine.
What am I missing??? :-$

You are missing the fact that Mr. James wants to convert 500 files without having to open each one individually.

But isn't he going to have to ,at some point, deal with each one individually?? You cannot stack 500 crd files in one directory and do a one step conversion.
If you are going to do that, you might as well work with just the last or largest file, because all the point numbers will overwrite each other.(If you renumber the overwrites, then how do you identify the job each represents?) And are all of the points on the same grid system? Polaris, solar, magnetic, assumed and SPC?? That would be a mess.
I agree that it will take time, but if you need to keep the points in some sort of identifiable datum, then conversion one or two at a time is a must. If you just want random points and basis of bearing means nothing, then knock your self out.
Besides a conversion of a point file in Carlson takes VERY little tine, I'd copy all my crd files into one data folder and then have at then in a master drawing. Massage them as needed and shoot them into Excel.

Cannot is a pretty strong word. You could have them in 500 sub-folders and do it.

> ... because all the point numbers will overwrite each other.

You simply add a field for the source file. Assuming unique file names you wouldn't even need the path.

Yes I would like to bring all 500 files into MS Access. MS Access has some pretty strong filter and decision tools, based on any data set. I can isolate only the points that have a certain description and only the points that are in the NC Grid system or even a specific location. Excel will do it, but its not the right tool for this. So I could send all Traverse points out for all my jobs over the years and convert them to a kml file and send them to google earth . So when the guys go out I can say there is a point here go find it for this next job .Right now I have to remember a job and then get the trav out of it, its a pain. This also allow me to start tying my control to client data base info. I am putting every client/job over the last 17 years in MS Access and am going to start tying information together. Its a interesting project for me, I will have my own in House GIS.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "my own in house GIS" So I started thinking Map3D, but then I realized the binary CRD file needs conversion, but then I asked myself why? what's contained in the CRD file?

Question - will each CRD file have just the normal "P,N,E,Z,D" fields?
or will some have additional User Defined fields?

will all of them have the exact same file structure?

So, I'm thinking of a two step process: batch conversion and then import into something

I am thinking Terry with Dotsoft would have the answer to that question. And probably could write a batch conversion program.

I looked at them in a Binary viewer program and they look tab delaminated. But that's all I can tell and the info did not makes any sense since they are Hex numbers or something.

Did I talk to you on the phone this morning, or was that a coincidence that I talked to another NC surveyor? If that was you, I can add the harvester you need.

The harvest results could be re-imported and sent to GE in one output.
