Had a shadow worker yesterday. He got the day off from school to shadow someone at work. I showed him what I did on the computer to get ready to go hunt some corners. Then we loaded up, got some diesel and went out to the field. We set up the base, I explained it picked up satellite signals and the other radio and such. Then we went and found some corners which needed the magnetic detector. He really liked running that. Went on a hike up in the junipers and found three corners. I told him to get us back to the truck and he did. Maybe there is some surveyor in him, don't really know, it's my grandson. He finished his report up for school when we got back, used up the whole page. I heard him tell his mother it was an awesome day.

Here is a picture.

Did something like that with a 10th grader a dozen years ago. His father had worked with me quite a bit so I thought this might help him understand what his dad did part time. Dang kid skipped right over surveying and picked up a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. His Masters project was funded by NASA.

In 5th grade I had create an "all about me" type of poster to put in the front of the school (along with a few other students). I had to put a picture up and list my dog's name, favorite color, etc. They also asked "What I want to be when I grow up?" and this one stumped me, because I had never thought about it (and my parents never pressured me). My mom was a teacher before she became a SAHM, so I never had much interest in that. So I went with my dad's job -- a Registered Land Surveyor! Fast forward 20 years and here I am.

On a side note, if you ask my 4 year old or 2 year old what they want to be when they grow, they will say Doctor (or a frog)!

When i went to high school ( grade 12 over here ) i went into an instep program which you spend 1 day per week getting 'work experience' i chose surveying because one of my brothers mates did it. i found it very enjoyable.

When i graduated 3 years later i sent them a picture of me accepting my diploma and a thank you letter, just so they knew that they weren't wasting their time.

If i ever had the chance to help someone out like that i would do it in a heart beat.
