Calculate volume survey of tank bottom(Contour)

How to take survey of tank bottom (Shape dish type or irregular), to correct volume calculate. If any body have procedure Please send with caculation.

How irregular is the bottom? What sort of tank is it? Where are you measuring? (Can you get inside or are you measuring the outside with a presumed thickness of the materials)

What software do you have available?

Simplest solution is to fill the tank with water, then empty the tank into another tank or a measuring device. This could be tough for an over sized tank.

If you cannot do this and the tank has some fairly regular portions, break it up into sections / pieces.

If it is very irregular, you can break it up like Riemann Sums - essentially grid it.

Of course, you can just run it through a DTM.

Assuming this is a very large tank such that you could basically do a topo on the inside. In that case, do it like you would anything else.

Thanks Spledeus,

I am surveying from inside, I dont have any software. I am making section and take survey with reference datum. then averaging cicular elvation reading with ref datum. then calculate cicular portion volume and another trangular portion volume. But calculation is very lengthy. many times make mistak.

Normally my tank irregular but cone down shape.

If you have a regular solid, you can look up the volume calcs.

If you have an irregular solid and you do not have fancy surveying software, you can create a grid in excel. Let's take the fun example of you having to be close enough. Call each cell a foot. You can resize so things look a little closer to reality.

Now take your measurements (let's say elevations) and pop them on the grid. i am assuming this tank has a uniform top that is level.

To fill in the blanks, you can interpolate from point to point. A simple example:

24.3 __._ __._ __._ 24.7 => 24.3 24.4 24.5 24.6 24.7 (This can be automated, but I would have to look up the COUNT function based on column or row return)

I would then use another tab and invert the elevations to turn them into depths. Real easy if the top is level. Copy and paste the formula from one cell to all of them.

Because each cell is a foot by a foot, the depth is the volume for this cell. Sum all the cells and you have a volume based on a 1' grid.

Now, you might want something closer. Create a new spreadsheet. Assume each cell is 0.1' square. Now plot your locations in the correct grid locations. Interpolate (hopefully you've figured out an automatic way). Now the cell is 0.1' x 0.1' so each one has a volume of 0.01 x depth. Or, sum the cells and multiple by the 0.01.
