After a two year sabbatical from membership in the state society I decided to rejoin. Charlie Tucker is going to be at the convention this year which is a must for me to attend. Charlie helped me out a few years ago an an RR survey and I wouldn't miss his presentation.
As I'm going through the UCLS website I notice my name for the Corner Record Competition for 2012. I don't know if it's a mistake or what but I never went to the 2012 convention nor did I enter one of my corner records. I do put a lot of effort into them and have been continually improving them (from my viewpoint) for a while now. I don't even know which one was entered or who entered it.
Maybe one needs to attend the state conventions just to see what competition you've entered and to make sure you aren't put on any boards or committees you don't want to be on.
I do like to do corner records and hunt for and preserve PLSS corners even though it isn't all that lucrative. The little money so far has come from grants to the county. I'm going to try and see if I can get some private landowners to pay as I found a lot of original stones last fall in a burn scar prior to the dozer chaining. It's the biggest PLSS project I've ever done, over 100 hours on an ATV solely locating and flagging PLSS corners in a 12,000 acre area. My best day was six stones and there were a couple of days I didn't find even one. I'm pretty sure quite few of the corners I located hadn't been found in over a hundred years. It would be nice to complete the job and do a corner record (with OPUS derived coordinates) and a re-mon but like the last hundred years, and probably the next hundred, there is just no public money for preservation of the PLSS in my county. I may have poisoned the well further last year by raising heck that provision to protect corners in the dozer chaining area hadn't been put into the original work plan. After a campaign that resulted in a barrage of emails from the survey community in the state the county reluctantly agreed to put some money into it. Then I had to be the low bidder to get the work. It was like trying to pry the scales off an alligator. The poor boy is still upset I believe.
Proposed Utah Corner Record Standards
Also just found this proposed Utah standard. Someone in UCLS is doing some excellent work.
Proposed Utah Corner Record Standard
I voted YES, hope it gets adopted. It's been sorely needed for a long time.

Congratulations, Leon! And, You're welcome. ;o)
The Stds. committee wanted to attach a few sample corner records to the standards and yours was one we chose to attach. The selected records were posted at the convention in the map/plat competition so surveyors could see and vote on some excellent examples. We figured that we'd update the sample attachments each year with the ones that won the competition.
Here's a link to one of Leon's corner records. (Not sure if this is the one that won)

Proposed Utah Corner Record Standards
That resolves the mystery. I think I've done about 70 corner records so far in the county. The one you posted was the first county PLSS cap I ever set.
I think at this point my inventory (corners I've located) is at about 50. Hopefully the funding will materialize so I can do the re-mons and corner records. I have an ATV since the project last fall so as an old guy I'll still keep going for as long as I can. The ATV makes it easier and quicker to haul all the stuff needed to the corner locations out in the hills and mountains.
As far as the 1855-56 posts set in the occupied valley, it will take some sort of divine intervention to find them. It's like a free for all in the proportioning from anything and everything, I try to stay out of there. I can't wait to see some of the narratives if the corner record standard is followed.

Can I upload a PDF?
Proposed Utah Corner Record Standards
Not sure what you mean.
Maybe Wendell can tell you how to upload a pdf onto this site. Otherwise you need the pdf on the web somewhere to load from.
If you open a pdf all you need do is save it if you want a copy (unless it's locked from saving).
