How many folks have experienced the failure of the on-board battery in their Ashtech Locus?

TIA

Yes. They are "welded" shut. The plastic is sealed.
There was a complete set of instructions on RPLS.com, with pics, to change this battery.

Have you had to replace any of yours Nate?

I had one knock one over, and broke, and had a new housing fitted, and learned about it. I did not replace a battery. I can only point you in a general direction. Not give you specifics.
~ Sorry ~

As a former Locus owner, do your research on the other board.

Might get lucky, might not.

Good unit for its day, but they are dying off daily.

I had one go bad and had Peter Lahaye, aka The Stereo Doctor, replace the batteries in all three of my units. Can't recall the charge, but he opened and closed them without leaving any noticeable marks-very pleased with his work.

The 3 that I own (2 Ashtech 1 Sokkia) are 1999 and 2000 models as per the serial numbers and rarely if ever give me problems. Before every new project I clear all the memory by holding the button down to a constant beep but let off before they go into load firmware mode. They were the VW Beetle of GPS receivers and have paid for themselves many many times over as compared to any other surveying instrument I have ever owned.
