Great pics, as usual. The basketball "court" could use a new drainage plan. 😉

Why are the manholes so deep?

Have a great day!

not sure why so deep...bush engineering maybe...to get them to flow and with only the concrete manhole structures they had on hand...

would the frost line have anything to do with the depth?

good point but some manholes are surface level as well...and they all have a rubber seal gasket under the metal lid itself

Second guess. This is Togiak so they ordered precast structures and all the same height. The gravity dictated the line depth but the precast dictated the actual top of the SSMH. That makes more sense.

Probably same reason as in Lawton and in Portland. A few inches of gravel added to regrade potholed road. Manholes covered and soon forgotten. More gravel added year by year, some intersections rebuilt altogether. Pretty soon, some manholes are 6 feet under.
