@lukenz?ÿ

A few of the specs look a bit weak:

  • 500 nits screen brightness is about the same as a fairly high spec phone but still fairly low for sunlight readability. Although it does say it has some form of anti-reflective treatment.
  • 3,200 mAh battery seems very small.

Edit: It says it also has an extended life 5,580mAh battery.

From my experience, you'll be wishing for a long time. Well the windows version doesn't usually freeze, it just crashes, gets stuck in the edit mode, among many other glitches. I've stopped bothering to report them. They just out the tickets "on hold".?ÿ

I would be excited to try one of those but it feels like my Panasonic fz-m1 will last forever.?ÿ

I'd be excited for anyone to try it and share their review - maybe that's something that SurveyorConnect could expand into, i.e. Tech Reviews.

They aren't able to supply them yet. Don't know much about nits on screens but the previous model I currently use, fz-b2, is fine outdoors

I'm sure there will be a new windows version coming too you could use (based on model you have being a windows one) but the one in the link is android

@lukenz Just wish Trimble would allow Access Android to work on non Trimble equipment.

Agreed, but Trimble and Leica save themselves support issues by only allowing their software on their product. Keeps total control and that reliability aspect keeps the punters happy. Maybe Topcon/sokkia too but not sure the software is as big free as the big two from what I've seen.

?ÿ

But a TSC5 runs about 15k vs the Panasonic at 3k and can't tell me that keyboard is that valuable. Although decent android IP68 phones can be had for $500-1k.

?ÿ

Really happy with the 7" screen as compromise between too heavy/bulky and still being big enough to read plans (just).

There is one newer than my windows version also, and one older (came out in 2014 I believe). The older one runs windows 8 and is noticeably slower. Mine doesn't feel like it's slowed down at all. At this point it would only be worth an upgrade for better ergonomics and more hot keys.?ÿ

I believe Trimble access will run on these but you have to pay a large fee for the software and get a tdl 2.4 radio. At that point you might as well get a tsc5.?ÿ

I tried the tsc7 the other day and it's a no go for me working alone, carrying everything by myself. The Panasonic is smaller than just the screen on the tsc7.?ÿ

I'm betting that software would be awesome with one of the new Cat phones

@jaro Check the specs on those CAT phones.?ÿ The one I was looking at is 1/2 the spec of my old S8 active that is years old, and their pro model is just barley the same in spec.

?ÿ

They have potential though.

Leica wants to sell you their equipment but the local Leica dealer who upgraded my 1203 firmware for me and let me test the ts16 with Fieldgenius on my Panasonic....said he was curious how captivate would work on the Panasonic. We never tried because my boss isn't interested in adding in another different software to the mix, but didn't sound like it was "not allowed". Not supported or encouraged maybe.?ÿ

I had been using a Trimble Nomad for years even though I purchased Field Genius last year. Now that I'm going to need to use FG with the Stonex 900A, I'll fully migrate over to my Samsung S10+ which in all honesty works much quicker with more features (tilt for one) than the Nomad running Windows CE. I'm really not concerned damaging the phone. I go through new cell phones about once per year and get one that's a couple models old on ebay for?ÿ about $250. It is one less device I need to carry (as I used my cell phone as wifi hotspot). Equipment a little lighter and I bought a motorcycle bracket that holds the phone super secure. I also have it in an expanded battery case that gives me all the juice I need (I'm rarely in the field more than 3 hrs at a time for the work I do).

Did I mention the Stonex 900A is incredible at gaining/holding fixed positions?

You're right - those Cat phones fare poorly in reviews.

@lukenz 15k seems a bit steep for a TSC5

@azweig?ÿ

You need to convert from NZ dollars to US I'm guessing. Dealer quoted price two days ago, hence my shock. Maybe it was the RRP and when they put a package together there is discounting involved.

?ÿ

Still point is it is moonbeams more than the tablet.

@lukenz I gotcha. That's still $10,700 +/- USD which is still on the high side, but dealers always give some sort of discount.

@350rocketmike?ÿ

Those words not supported would be a deal breaker to me, can waste so many chargible hours chasing bugs, getting setups right that the more expensive gear doesn't actually end up being that much more expensive once all factors are added in.

?ÿ

Be interesting to quantify all the field genius hassles it sounds you've had and put a $ figure on it, may help the boss support the upgrade to better total packages (was going to just say gear but the tablet and robot you have are good kit).
