A little warning for those using the new Allegro or planning to update the software.

Besides the fact that they changed the way Leica handles prism offsets, the newest update to the Allegro is a little problematic with resections. We have had three instruments affected by this. Apparently it measures the raw data correctly, but somehow computes the point in error by at least a hundred feet.
We went through every diagnostic and tried everything we thought we were doing wrong and we eliminated everything but the software. Once we downgraded the software to a previous version everything worked fine.

If we didn't do a check on a point not involved in the resection, we may not have caught this. Proper procedure saves the day, again.

For those using Leica prisms, pay attention to your prism offset, they have eliminated the need to do math and you now enter the actual prism offset. That was a surprise as well, but not in a good way.

Be careful when switching back and forth bewteen prism and reflecterless. We had problems where the first point taken after changing the constant would not use the changed constant. All points taken after that first point would.

Was any of this information in the release notes?

Scott,
What software are you using on the Allegro?
Carlson SurvCE? If so, what version?

Bob

Hi,

I'm sorry the Leica prism constant change has been confusing. The goal was simplification and standardization for all total stations. Not all Leica instruments even have the built-in prism constant, so we wanted to hide that adjustment from the user while we made some other changes to how prism constants were handled.

As for the resection, please send your raw file in to our tech support. Its the best way for us to track down the problem. Did you call when you had the problem? If you do call in, please give them your feedback on how we can make the prism constants more clear!

Sarah Winter,
Programmer, SurvCE
