My son just got an Allegro CX to go with a Leica gun and he can't get it to communicate with his laptop running vista. He had to buy a USB to serial adapter and I can't find a version of Activesync that will run on his laptop. Anybody know how to get them to talk?
Thanks

We use Carlsons transfer utility (SurvCom) on Win 7 and the Allegro CX.

Edit:
This assumes he has SurvCE.

Sorry

It all depends upon what is on the Allegro CX

If he has SurvCE, he may be able to obtain Carlson X-Port

You can download it from the Carlson site and when the credentials show up while opening on your PC, call the number on that page and furnish the numbers they ask for (located within the SurvCE software on the Allegro CX)

Activesync for Vista and above is called "Mobile Device Center".

Another obstacle is the comm ports. We had to use one of those usb to serial converters. I installed the software but every usb slot I stick it in (only 3) do not match the comm 1 and 2 shown on the Allegro. One said 3, one said 4, and the other didn't pop up and say anything. I got the 64 bit Mobile Device Center but it hasn't helped yet. Ports might all be wrong.

On the Allegro the Com 1 & 2 refer to the port on the Allegro, I think they are labeled with Com 1 being to the left as you hold the Allegro in the normal position looking at the screen. The Com 3 & 4 on the Vista PC refer to the port assigned to the USB to Serial adapter. On the Allegro go to Control Panel and select PC Connection Properties, Mine says "Connect using: 'Com1 @ 115k baud'. On the PC look to see which Com port the USB to Serial adapter is using, then in Mobile Device Center open the Connection Settings box and check mark the "Allow connections to one of the following:" and in the drop down below that select the Com port that the USB to Serial in using. You do not need to check mark the "Allow USB connections", that is for if you are using a newer field computer that has USB output such as a Carlson Surveyor + or a Ranger 3.
Hope this helps, this setup can be done, we have 3 Allegro CX units that I download to a Windows 7 PC daily although I have an actual com port installed in my PC but field guys use newer laptops with the USB to Serial adapter also. Be sure you are using the correct Serial Cable to connect the Allegro to the adapter, I think is a null modem cable.
Ken
