I just received this in an email from ACSM:

Dear Member:
Like you, organizations such as ACSM are being affected by the current economic downturn. Lower than normal membership renewals, decreased sales in our online bookstore, and disappointing registration numbers and exhibitor participation for our annual conference are among factors that are impacting the resources needed to conduct the business of ACSM. The cumulative effect of the myriad circumstances affecting us is that ACSM will not be able to provide a printed version of its bi-monthly ACSM Bulletin magazine for the remainder of 2010, and perhaps beyond. Fortunately, technology has advanced to the point that online presentation of publications can be done very effectively. Consequently, the final three (3) 2010 editions (beginning with No. 246) of the ACSM Bulletin will be provided online only via our website, www.acsm.net. Of course, digital files will be kept by ACSM for each edition of the magazine in hopes that in the future we may be able to print them as demand and circumstances dictate. Please accept our most sincere apologizes for this situation, and know that we truly appreciate your patience and support. -- Curt Sumner, ACSM Executive Director

Hmmmm.
So..are they going to reduce membership dues?
😉
I see no hope over there as an association of what it was 25- 30 years ago. It's gone,
unless some fearless crusader appears out of the fog.

I have no comment on the content of the letter, but it's nice to see someone use the word "myriad" correctly for a change.

Rich...
A sign of the trickle down effect still to further hit Americans and then the rest of the world ! A publisher loses a contract, less requirement for paper, less postage all means more job loss. I have always thought this is like a tornado/ hurricane where last year have been in the still eye and are about to hit the destructive turbulence as we come out.
Meanwhile, the big Wall st players are already back packaging up worthless bonds and at their old games ripping off unsuspecting.
The OZ dollar yesterday brought 96 US cents, same as just before the crash in 2008 when it fell to 64c.
Signs sure not glowing in US.
BTW there will be jobs in OZ outback mining sites for good surveyors as there is a shortage of graduates here.

Cuz Richard,
What sort of National Org. do you have down under? Is it privately sponsored or a government entity?
A letter Re: ACSM Bulletin... CUZ
Privately run. Resigned in 2002 , or should I say spat the dummy with organization. NOw combines all forms surveying, cadastral, engineering , GIS and spacial industry et al. Have state entities with a National body. Raises funds through membership.
That said our state surveyors board is self sufficient funded from a plan levee fee charged on all certified plans lodged in LTO and our annual dues.

It seems like most magazines are headed in this direction. I was dissappointed to read the announcement about the ACSM Bulletin, as I personally enjoy having a hard copy edition of the magazine.

I too enjoy the Hard Copy of the Bulletin. Membership in NSPS is down about 25% this year. Becasue of that, the income estimate in the budget is low. This is an effort not to stay within the budget, but to stay within the income limits. I am sure that it was a hard decission for leadership to stop printing the Bulletin, but budget wise it is a responsible decision.
